Moms with littles: how bad is it post op??

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I have my last appt on Wednesday (May 30th) and hopefully have surgery sometime in July. I have a 6 yo and a 4 yo. My husband is taking a week off work but no more than that. I’m wondering what it will be like on week 2. They have day camp from 9-3 on some days but aside from that will I be ok caring for them in a half ass way lol??? What was your experience?
I’ll take any advice I can get.

Mine aren't little anymore, but I would make sure you are not lifting any more than you should. The first week especially. Remember not to eat your kids leftovers. They will be eating more than you.

I was very fortunate that my husband works from home and he has basically taken care of my 7 and 3 year old for the past month since surgery. But in all honesty I could have handled them one week post op for half the day. I think this will go as well as your husband lets it. If he takes over the childcare as soon as he comes home from work you will do fine. Good luck.

I have three boys, 9,5,and 4 and besides being tired the first week and needing naps, I was able to continue my normal daily routine with them. Having your husband at home the first week will be very helpful to allow you time to rest and get your walking in.

My boys are 4 and 1. My husband was also home the first week. I actually felt pretty good, after 4-5 days I was just taking Tylenol once in a while. When my husband wasn't there the main issue was the diapers, couldn't lift him up to changing table. Changing on the floor wasn't great either, not that easy to get up and down.

Don't be hard on yourself. Half-ass is just fine for a week or two while you recover. Go stock up on things they like to eat that are easy and relax. My kids ate a lot of pb and j and dinners were often frozen stuff from trader joes. It will be ok.

I think you will be ok. I got really run down when I went to the kids ball games in May and it was 50-60 degrees. I got really cold and couldn’t warm up. Don’t do too much. Now that that it’s hot, it’s hard to get enough liquid in me. If you are hanging around the house you should be ok. Mine are older (8&13) and I made them bring me stuff.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
