Anyone else freaking out?

I haven't even scheduled my surgery yet, but I'm freaking out. My last apt is May 29th, then we submit to insurance. I've been on this journey since November but I'm just now freaking out. What if I can never have a fry again? Should I even care? Isn't that my problem? Can I still enjoy life without food? I go to food for such comfort and that's so wrong. I guess I'm worried I won't enjoy what I will be eating. Do any post op patients still enjoy food? Like for holidays, can you still eat just small amounts? Slightly freaking out over here!

Why are you getting WLS? You don't have to answer here, just think about that.
Is food more important than why you decided to undergo WLS?

I fully understand your mindset. I grew up with a large Italian family. Food was EVERYTHING! I was also very scared about giving up all my go-to's and favorites. And it wasn't easy either. But guess what. I don't miss most of them. I've found ways around things, better options that get me close enough to that food that I don't miss it.

And not everyone is the same with food and dumping. I ate a whole piece of pizza and was fine. I felt run down and gross, but I wasn't sick. I've eaten fried raviolis, same deal, outside of feeling like junk, I was fine. I have had issues with things I didn't think I would, like Tomato Soup. And had ZERO issues at all with things I never thought would be fine, like Hersey's Kisses.

I can say, without a single shadow of a doubt, that I do not regret having the surgery. I thought I might for a bit, while going through stalls and smelling my kids toasting bread or cooking pizza... but, I got over it. I actually have some toast on occasion, I just go for the highest grain count I can. It costs more, but you eat SO much less that it almost balances out.

Side effect of me eating better, so does my family now. And they are all becoming healthier people as well.

Just focus on what you CAN do rather than what you CAN'T do. You'll have plenty of time to figure out your new stomach after you've been cleared to experiment.

Always remember your "Why's". It's just food. You have power of it, not the other way around.

I am following@Matt z around the board because I agree with everything he says, evidently. ;-) there is a sh**-ton of food we can eat and be within the lanes of a healthy diet. Just eat less of it. And if that doesn't work, focus on slowish carb macros.

So here’s my take on it.... absolutely no regrets.. down 101lbs and feeling like a million bucks. 25 more to go... Shopping is amazing and I look quite sexy. However. I did get in bed with the devil... 8 months out and I still cannot eat most things. I’m the queen of dumping syndrome and and feeling sick and throwing up. I haven’t even tried most foods and I dump almost daily. I do have a structure- so until I get that opened up- I just eat what I can digest. I experiment all the time. I can digest thin crust pizza and cheese and crackers and berries- and cannot most healthy things. Very strange. For me? I feel like I have to learn to eat all over again. I don’t ever know what I can and can’t digest. I wish I could have chicken breast and salad. Or a balanced diet like we’re suppose to have... I do not. I drink shakes and things. Protein Bars and Snacks. I came from a huge family and my boyfriend is a foodie. I cannot join them. I’m OK with that mostly. I do taste or nibble sometimes to test the waters on digesting it.. so... I want you to see the rough side too. I know once I open the structure I can likely digest a lot more. But this has been my exhausting experience 8 months in... god honest truth. My positive outlook is my confidence and new quality of life. I’ll eventually be able to eat a balanced clean diet of real Protein and food. When?? Who the heck knows... lol.

The first few months were really hard, but I've gotten used to not being able to gorge myself. I still have my days where I want to overeat, but mostly those are gone. You get to a point where it's not worth throwing up over, and you find other outlets.

MissLinseyR I understand completely!! I would walk through grocery stores and look at food like I was mourning it!! I would actually walk down the isle’s and look at the food and say I can’t have you anymore or you and I’d get so sad and feel a mournful feeling! I mean that how My family and I Celebrate the holidays, my kids love coming home for a home cooked meal from there momma and my grands know GeeGee has something sweet to eat somewhere! It gives you that fuzzy warm feeling! I mean lets face it food has gotten me through a lot of bad time, but it also got me to where I’m at health wise!! I am 1 week post-op, I want tell you it was an easy surgery for me because it hasn’t been I have been hurting a lot and have had two crying spells, but I know this too shall pass!! I have felt better today and even got outside some with my family!! We will get there, we will not let this get the best of us! I have found myself trying to figure out ways to make a healthy dish from something I’m craving so when I am able to eat I will be ready! I’ve lost 25 lbs so far and yay me!! Good Luck!! The junky Bakery Aisle where Little Debbie, DingDongs and lunchbox sized pies live. It is just like funeral viewing hours. You pass slowly by, you remark how nice they look just lying there, you sniff, daub youreyes, look sad and then move along so someone else can have their turn.😪😪😪

I'm writing this from my hospital bed (surgery was Friday) and I'm not thinking about food anymore. It’s like that craving has been removed. Maybe it’s still very new for me—excitement maybe, adrenaline? I don’t know, I have no interest not even in my beloved coffee. This could all change on a dime, but right now I’m just going to enjoy the ride🙂

Hey MissLindseyR, a quick,little story. Tomkitten(my son) was feeling sorry for me,at Mothers Day so he bought,me a box of Little Debbie strawberry, cakes with,vanilla frostening. Well my flesh is sometimes weak and,i didn't want him to regret spending the money on me so I unwrapped one, that icing was the consistency and about as tasty as a spoonful of Crisco straight from the can. Ychhh! Told him tobtrash themselves them his own self, I did not care. You may find after surgery,a greasy slimy old French Fry from MickeyD makes you feel the same way. Yeah, eventually you'll eat again but be prepared for the fact things may never taste the same. I truly don't crave sweet things, especially Desserts, told my Nutritionist Roy that Thursday. Why I truly crave is tender cooked vegetables, eespecially the cabbbage family. And nuke a sweet potato, hold it in front of my face and I'll,follow you,most anywhere. Don't need brown sugar or even butter, splint the skin open and I'll eat it that way.😜

What type of outlets do you use? I'm trying to find mine, I do have a tendency to eat when I'm bored. That's one of my biggest issues.

Oh wow, congrats on having your surgery. I hope you have a speedy recovery. I've heard that you can lose your hunger for a while. Maybe during that time I can make sure to have other hobbies in place besides food.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
