Hello Everyone! I just created my bariatricpal account. I am 5'2 and 1/2. I'm curious if they will base my BMI off of 5'2 or 5'3. I'm also right around the 200lb mark, give or take a few pounds. I am hoping to get approved for the surgery because I am 35 and already on medicine for high blood pressure and I'm hypo thyroid which makes it a b*itch to get the weight off. I'm getting mixed reactions from my family about deciding to meet with a weight loss surgeon. I just really want to be healthy for years to come. I don't want to follow my father's path and end up having heart issues in my later years.

I just wanted to say hello and I look forward to being involved with this group. I want to thank each and everyone one of you for being on here to get support and provide support! You are my friend!

Welcome! I am not sure where they will base your height from. But that’s something the surgeon will talk to you about.

i think it’s great you’re thinking about your health & the future. You may receive a lot of encouragement and a lot of discouragement from family/friends/community but do not let that discourage you.

There is a great community here and I hope you learn a lot. Please keep us updated on your journey

The shorter they make you the higher your BMI will be and more likely you will be to get your surgery. Besides from then on you don't have to sit upright like a little soldier, you can relax and be you. Welcome, you'll learn a lot here and make some new friends. This is a strange yet wonderful journey you're starting on. You're among friends on here.😛

You are in the right place!! I'm about the same height as you are and when I met with my surgeon I was around 209 (I gained weight throughout my 6-month process). I got the same confusion from family and friends because my weight is equally distributed so I look like I weigh less than I do. However, it's about your overall health and I was not at a healthy weight and felt that all over my body. Like you, I also have comorbidity (hypertension) and my dad also had heart issues (he had his first heart attack at 31 and second when he was 40 to which he succumbed). This is surgery is for you to experience life at your healthiest best. Welcome!

cammarays - what type of insurance do you have? I'm so nervous mine won't approve me because I'm on the lower BMI scale. Maybe it doesn't matter since I still am considered obese and I have the blood pressure issue.

Sorry, I'm just seeing this. I have HealthFirst (I'm in NY). And with your co-morbidity under most insurance, you qualify with a BMI at 35 and over. Without your comorbidity, you would need to be at a BMI of 40 and over. Take a look at this link it was so helpful. It has almost every insurance out there and their requirements. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/insurance-and-costs/am-i-covered/check-my-insurance

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
