I had my surgery on Tuesday May 15th. Despite dealing with the extra pain that came along with correcting an unknown hiatal hernia, recovery has been ok except for the one nagging incision. It’s seriously burns (it’s not infected) or aches all day long unless I keep an ice pack on it. Does any one have any suggestions on how alleviate this? Also I don’t ever have the urge to pee anymore (sorry TMI) I just go because my brain thinks it’s been too long. Someone tell me I’m not going insane.

Definitely not insane.! Sounds normal to me. My incision did not burn, but it was red and itchy. It is much better now. I am 3 weeks post-op. What helped the most was when the glue and strips finally fell off. I was allergic to them. I also took Benadryl. Your surgeon’s office can tell you what to do for the burning.

As long as you ARE peeing, that’s all that matters. You will definitely get the urge to pee back, especially with all the hydrating we are required to do.

It gets much better!

I have the same issue with the one nagging incision. I am 26days post op and just had my follow up at the surgeons office. I asked about the burning/pain and was told that the incision they use to pull the excised portion of the stomach out (I had the sleeve) is larger than the others and requires an internal suture in the actual muscle, which is what causes the burning/pulling/pain and that it should be completely gone by 6 weeks.

I was the opposite of you. I felt like I had to pee but just couldn’t. This went on for two days. It was apparently called retention from the general anesthesia. Luckily I started to pee, though I had to “force” myself, and they released me from the hospital. It resolved itself completely within 4 days. It quite common.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
