Restricted breathing, walking and fatigue/malaise

Recommended Posts

Sleeved 5/3 and I haven’t been able to take a deep breath or talk loud since. Of course, I am breathing, just hurts in center of chest if I try to take a deep breath. I’ve been too tired to do the walking. I did finally walk for 10 minutes today but had to stop and rest twice. Nothing but Tylenol since 5/4 but still feeling weak and mentally foggy. Any thoughts appreciated! I am 65 so I’ve been chalking it up to my age.

Are you using your spirometer? That helped me breath better and deeper after surgery. It helps the lungs to clear also so pneumonia doesn’t set in. I used mine for 2 weeks after surgery.

They put some blue thing in my bag to go home with me that looks like some breathing thing. They either didn’t show me how to use it or I don’t remember. . I tried breathing hard in order to push what’s inside up the tube but I can’t get it to budge. Am I doing it wrong? How long and how often am I supposed to be doing this? 5 minutes 3 times a day for instance?

You suck in and the goal is to get the ball to the top - do it at least 10xs a day.

Oh and make yourself cough after you do each breath. It helps break up anything in your lungs. That’s what my nurses told me.

Thank you SO much!!! I was doing it wrong. Thank God for you and this forum! You would think they would have put instructions with it into my bag to go home from the hospital. Nope. I’ve already lost a few days but I’ll do what I can. I’m sure this is also why I’m so tired and foggy. I really appreciate your help!

You’re so very welcome! It really helps strengthen your lungs! Pray you’re feeling better soon.

Thank you for asking WildcatGirl71. Since using the spirometer I'm doing much better. Was able to walk 1 mile yesterday and today. I still feel some restriction but it's much better than it was so I'll continue using it until I'm told not to. I'm officially 6 days out and didn't even take any Tylenol today. I'm not saying there isn't pain, but not enough I need pain meds. I'm doing much better than I expected to be at this point.

Awesome!! Glad your pain is subsiding and you’re able to breathe better. Walking is great to break up that gas pain. Mine was horrible. Took about a week and a half for it to finally go away.

Hi Hopeful,

Did the hospital provide one of the breathing apparatus to help take deep breathes? Many people said it helped.

I had surgery on May 2. That feeling of malaise sounds very familiar! Mine lasted for about 5 days. The weakness is most likely from the lack of Protein and nutrients.

There is nothing wrong with stopping to rest! Just take a few more steps each day.

It WILL get better!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
