I'd honestly ask to go to an endocrinologist or diabetologist at this point since you have such special circumstances with the surgery.

Also, keep in mind that sometimes T1 can masquerade as T2. In reality it's really a special subset of T1-adult onset. Has to do with phenotypes I believe. So I would ask if there is any way they could make certain it's T2 and not another variation of it. I've had 2 friends who they found out were actually late onset T1s and not the T2s the docs had initially thought.

How much sugar in the Protein Bar? How many sugar alcohols. There is some proof that many diabetics do not do well with SAs. That they metabolize >50% of the carbs in them as sugar. So you may be sabotaging your bgs with the Special K chips and also the bars/shakes? I know Mr. F. has a terrible spike with Atkins Protein Bars and doesn't tolerate Protein Drinks either. :( I know that's just anecdotal but just wanted to throw that out to you.

If it were me, I'd also look up the book Normal Blood Sugars by Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, MD. He's a remarkable dude that pioneered the use of the home glucometer and eating to your meter. His A1c is lower than mine. He's over 70 and has zero diabetic neuropathy. He is a T1 and only take 5 units of slow acting insulin a day if I remember correctly. He's a diabetologist.

I wake up about 0430 hrs. I usually eat a Protein bar at 0500 hrs and then I have a Protein Shake between 0800 and 0900 hrs. I have a chef salad (almost every day) between 1100 and 1200 hrs. I will have a 100 cal bag of Special K chips around 1400 hrs. For dinner I usually have a salad only (if we eat out) or a pork chop and salad (if we eat at home). Sometimes, if the wife isn't home I will have a protein bar or shake for dinner. I also have a protein bar around 2000 hrs and go to sleep between 2100 and 2200 hrs.

What are your total carb and total sugar?

I'm so sorry to hear this. There is some interesting research linking animal Protein and diabetes, with many folks dropping their blood glucose and getting off meds within weeks after eliminating it from their diet. Check out Dr. Neal Barnard, who has some great books and videos about reversing diabetes. Quoting from his website, "...Dr. Barnard’s program [was] three times more effective than the American Diabetes Association dietary guidelines at controlling blood sugar."

For what it's worth, several of the popular keto/low-carb bloggers have turned out to have developed high bg and A1C numbers after years of a supposed diabetes-proof diet - particularly Shawn Baker and Jimmy Moore.

Hey girl, just fyi, but Jimmy Moore has a very public struggle with massive over eating. I've read him for years and his serving size is ridiculous. It's well documented that Protein over the adequate range can be converted to glucose in the liver by about 50% or so. Just putting that out there. IDK Shawn Baker though.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
