I found out after my endoscopy Friday that I have pretty severe GERD.

My surgeon thinks it will improve or disappear with the sleeve but I also hear it could worsen. Thoughts?

My surgeon said because I have GERD I am not a good candidate for a sleeve. He said patients that get a sleeve generally develop reflux, and if you already have a history of GERD its a bad idea.

I had GERD prior to surgery and my surgeon said I could still have the sleeve. I am still taking Pantoprazole for it and haven’t really had an issue since surgery, which was 1/2/18.

I'm 15 months post gastric sleeve. Before surgery, I had bad acid reflux. I've been on Protonix since surgery. Over the last several weeks, nausea, vomiting, can't eat solid food, pain, GERD is awful. Got dehydrated, hospital 4 days; endoscopy revealed no stricture, but erosions, scar tissue and bad GERD. Now I am not very pleased that I am most likely facing a revision to gastric bypass.

I never knew that with GERD it might be better to have the bypass instead of the sleeve.

Everything I've read recommends doing bypass if you have GERD. You want to choose the surgery that's best for you and this is one of those factors to help in that process. I was on the fence in the beginning, but I will say if I had GERD that would have pushed me over to the side of having the bypass done rather than the sleeve. This is one thing where I wouldn't hope for the best. Go with the surgery that has the highest chance of success for you. I had enough fun doing surgery once. I really wouldn't want to have to go through what lighthouse is. That sucks.

From all info. I've heard both professional and patient info. The sleeve is the worst wls you could possibly have if you already have gerd. So many people get revised to GBP from the sleeve due to gerd! Not sure why a doctor would give you such poor advice.

I'm planning on getting sleeved but if my EGD indicts at all that I have asymptomatic GERD then I'll probably switch to bypass. I do get heartburn from juices, soda and strong coffee and when it flares up its bad enough I know its nothing I'd like to deal with day in and day out.

Coffee and alcohol , well duh on those 2 but my other without fail, coconut oil. I usually can tell if it is in something even if it's not prominently labeled.

I know you’re right. The bypass just scares me more than the sleeve did. I’m only 23 and the sleeve felt younger and less complicated. But I also saw the pictures of my endoscopy and how severe the GERD was.

My mom thinks this endoscopy saved my life. If it was this advanced at 23, I’d be looking at cancer and erosion before I knew it.

I didn’t even realize I had acid reflux until the endoscopy. Now things are clicking and everyday I’m realizing how it’s impacted me, like “oh, that’s what that is?!”

My understanding is that bypass eliminates GERD where the sleeve has less of a chance of eliminating it

I had it and have no trace after bypass

I think your mom is absolutely right! Keep doing research to reassure yourself that you’re safe getting the bypass. Yes the sleeve is growing in popularity but that doesn’t mean that bypass still isn’t a great procedure with minimal complications.

It amazes me that I had no idea I was even impacted by GERD. Of course now things are clicking.

Some people swear their GERD got better with weight loss and that they did OK with the sleeve, but I think one of the bypasses either RnY,or SIPS would be better.[emoji13]

One of the reseasons I am getting a revision from vsg to rny is because I developed severe GERD.

I am currently wait to have a revision to the bypass I have severe acid reflux and I have the sleeve now so get the bypass to avoid further surgery
