Why no caffeine

Recommended Posts

Some physicians believe it is dehydrating, a diuretic and best to wean off prior to surgery because caffeine withdrawal is no fun while recovering from surgery. I was allowed to bring limited amount back after 3 weeks.

While caffeine itself doesn't cause ulcers, it can make them worse if they get started and it can increase acid production in the stomach.

Your team want you to go through caffeine withdrawal now because you don't need extra negative symptoms later when you're trying to recover from surgery.

Some doctors will allow you to drink one cup of regular coffee per day after surgery. Some doctors will allow only decaffeinated coffee. And some will ban both entirely. Some will allow it only after a few months.

Also....doctors may be stricter with bypass patients because there is a particular type of leak they're prone to that is more affected by increased acid.

Decaff was allowed on my presurg diet.

Also, caffeine is a diuretic, which doesn't help when you're already having trouble staying hydrated because you can't drink that much Water.

At this stage of my plan, I'm allowed 8 oz of coffee or tea a day, and I'm probably going to start drinking it because I've been so tired lately.

I guess that makes sense. Thanks for replying!! Day 1 is almost over....

Drink caffeine. That is ridiculous. Lol. I drank coffee up until the day before surgery. Even had a diet coke. Now, after surgery is different. For the reason she said above. If you can be sure to drink enough Water and liquids to offset the extra peeing that drinking caff will do, go for it. It's simply that caffeine makes you pee more, period. I hate Decaf coffee, I HATE IT. I drank it for the first week and could do no more. I started drinking my folgers caffienated coffee. I even had 1 teaspoon of sugar free hazlenut Creamer sometimes to it, instead of just plain powder3ed sugar and I am alive today. You can live too.. Just be careful you're drinking enough liquids to offset the pee'ing. K?

We were allowed coffee up until 2 days. Wrote surgery. Post surgery they didn't want you to have regular tea or coffee because the tannic acid in it can irritate the stomach and slow healing. I don't drink coffee so don't remember when it was allowed again, but think maybe week 4 or 5 for us.

I so feel your pain. I love coffee!! Love it! Stopping it was so hard and almost impossible. I talked to my nutritionist and she said to slowly wean myself off coffee during the 2 week pre-op diet so I don’t get headaches following surgery.

They really want you to stay away from coffee after surgery because of the acid it produces until all those staples heal.

I am now down to one cup a day from 4 to 8. This week I will come off completely. I do find that now I get headaches occasionally. When I absolutely can’t stand them I make a cup and take a few swallows.

I drank coffee before surgery, drank it starting immediately after. It had sugar in it then just like it does now.

No problems

Does anyone know why we can't have caffeine on the liquid pre op diet? I started today and I'm just curious as to why no coffee....I'm having a hard time with that. Thanks

Mine was to avoid a caffeine headache especially since I wasn’t allowed and Motrin or NSAIDs one week prior and one month after

I asked my doctor because I found a Protein Drink that has caffeine as well and the answer was not for one month after surgery because it slows healing and can be associated with ulcers.

I decided to kick the coffee habit on the start date of my liquid pre op. My first 2 days was a living hell. I was hungry had the most excruciating headache and I felt like my head was in the clouds. I started feeling better in day 3. I’m now on day 4 and I can say I feel way better. I’m still a little hungry...well maybe not hungry I just wanna chew something! Lol. I guess it’s all old habits that have to be broken;)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
