3 days after vsg surgery

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve 2/19, and was in tears over the shoulder pain (I have a high tolerance for pain). Today when I woke I felt some discomfort but it's much better. I slept in a recliner which helped somewhat. However, today I am feeling my incisions for the first time; hopefully medicine will help. I know it's hard, but trust me it will get better! I also know that everything seems 100x worse when we aren't able to sleep! I feel like I've been in a fog this week! Good luck, I'll be thinking about you!

Sometimes when they do a sleeve, they also repair a hiatal hernia (a little extra space where your esophagus passes through your diaphragm) ...it's pretty common.

Reason I brought it up, is that the hernia repair will often cause deferred nerve pain that you feel in your shoulder. How weird is that? But yeah...the neck and shoulder pain you're experiencing might be nerve pain from that region.

I had it, too...and I know it's miserable. Walking helped the rest of me feel better quicker...and alternating hot and cold packs on my shoulders helped. I think I liked hot the best.

Pain went away after a few days....got a little better each day. I know it's miserable. Wishing you the best.

I had hernia repair- this is good info for me!

The shoulder / neck pain is the worst and unfortunately takes a while to resolve. It can be gas or referred pain. Heat will help gas, for me it made referred pain worse. Call the dr if the pain meds aren't working, being in pain can effect your healing. They had to change mine completely, so it's not unheard of that one type of med doesn't work.

For fluids try Powerade zero, all the electrolytes without sugar or carbs. I also watered down my Protein Shakes for hydration, which worked well. Good news is in a week you'll likely feel much better.

You should be able to sleep however you want as long as it's not causing any pain to you, is what my doctor said. I used lots of pillows. It's uncomfortable the first few days but will get better. I was sleeved 2/12/18.

If the large incisions calms down and next pains didn't exist id be 100% better lol i tried to walk today in stores etc...and nope too painful

Hi, I'm 5 days post op from being sleeved. I received a binder from the hospital and has not taken it off. I think it helps my pain levels. I sleep in it too. Changing positions hurts but I can sleep most of the night. What did they give you for pain?

My doctor wasn’t against a binder, but it wasn’t part of his protocol. I went home with Lortab or liquid Vicodin. The only time I would have to take is after showering and dressing. Bending down was like DEATH!

I was given hydrocodone to take every 4 hours when I was released from the hospital. I took it as directed for 2 days. Now I only take it once a day usually at bedtime.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
