Can’t drink protein shakes! Post op

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone so as of today I am 10 days post op. I have been struggling really bad trying to get the Protein Shakes in me. They make me want to vomit! :( everyday I try and take a sip and I just can’t. I end up drinking broth. I have no issue getting my Water intake but I can’t get any Protein in me. I feel fine as of today but I know I need the protein. Does anyone have any suggestions on other ways I can get protein in me? Thanks for any suggestions.

Can you try making "creamy Protein broth"? Make sure you strain it first though. And btw, it's 28g of Cream of Mushroom. Click on it to make it bigger if you need to?

I was the same way!! I found the Unjury Protein chicken broth was my life saver. It has a ****-ton of sodium so you won't lose a ton of lbs cause you will retain Water but it got me to the pureed stage and then I lost the water weight.

Hi Krystal, yes me too. I am Day 10 as well and I am really sick of Protein Shakes. In fact, I am having less and less, as my appetite keeps shrinking. Even broth is turning my stomach as well.

I am Australian and a company here makes a really nice Protein Water. Tastes good, has 20g of isolate whey protein and all the Vitamins and minerals. It is called Bodiez Protein Water. https://bodiezpro.com

Not sure where you are from, but perhaps you can find something similar? I do also have their unflavoured (tasteless and odourless) Protein Powder which you can add to Soups, broths, shakes etc to get your protein grams.

Good luck!

Crap! Running to read the sodium content on the bag! :(:51_scream::57_cry: Crap! Well it's about 650mg of sodium all added together--give or take. :( But I still ended up at only 1296mg of sodium for the day. So I'll score it as a win. But yeah, you might not want to eat that for every meal and you can save quite a bit by omitting the cream soup--you don't really need it to taste good. (Thanks for giving me a heads up on that--I am usually not tracking sodium, but rather sugar instead.)

I use GENEPRO unflavored Protein. I know some don't like it but I use it daily. I would never get it all in otherwise. I put it in my coffee everyday. It has no taste at all. And 30grams. I had searched high and low for something I can handle. I would hate to know exactly how much $$ I have spent. I got tired of everything sweet. Good Luck

Let me second or third or whatever Protein Water. There are several different brands available; you can find them online if not at a local grocery store. I'm currently drinking Protein2O; 15 grams of protein per 16.9 oz. bottle.

Another suggestion would simply be to try different flavors and brands of Protein Shakes to see if you can find something that works.

And you just need to make it through the first month or so before things get a lot easier and you have more choices. Yogurt and cottage cheese and actual food are in the future.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Didn’t realize there were unflavored Protein powders out there. I think I’ll definitely look into that and give it a try because I need to get some protein in me! Also the pudding idea was a good one too :) thanks again everyone. I just wanna make it to my next phase at least which isn’t in two weeks nod then I can eat soft eggs refried Beans etc thank god! Lol

Hey also, if you use Peanut Butter powder it will cut the amount of sweet. My faves are bananas and cream + powdered peanut butter, or dutch chocolate + powdered peanut butter. When you're able to have more Fiber, 1oz frozen spinach and 1oz of frozen blueberries in the bananas and cream makes it yummy and barely sweet.

What brand Protein Shakes have you tried? I found most horrible until I tried “Premier Protein chocolate” recommended by my nutritionist.

Yum that actually sounds pretty good! Definitely will give that a try too. Thanks dodo much. I don’t want to harm my body by not getting any Protein in

I drink the Premier Protein as well but it’s the vanilla flavor and it just doesn’t sit well with me. I think I need to explore my horizons and try other flavors. I’ve heard good things about the chocolate

Try mixing it in a cup of decaff coffee. Hardly sweet at all: 6-8oz decaff + 2-3fl oz PP vanilla, chocolate, b/c, caramel. So so so good. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
