Craving pickle juice

Recommended Posts

So I’ve always loved sour/vinegary foods but I am craving pickles bad! I was sleeved 1/25/18 so I’m almost 2 weeks post op. Do you guys think it would be okay to drink Pickle Juice or is that too acidic?

Based on my own experience I think you'll be fine, but we are all different. One of the vets posted something about how the natural stomach acidity is way more than any drink/food could be, I don't remember the exact quote. I think it was @BigViffer? Anyways I would take a small sip and wait about 5 minutes to see if it feels okay. Or try watering it down a little to start?

That sounds good. Thanks so much for responding.

Yeah that was me, and while that is a pretty close quote, I am sure there is something out there that has a higher acidity level than our stomach acid, but you would have to look for it in a specialty store. Things like capsaicin extract.

In regards to Pickle Juice, if you have low levels of stomach acid causing acid reflux, vinegar is a common household remedy. If drinking pickle juice is out of the ordinary for you, it could be a sign of mild pica (craving weird or inedible substances). It's caused by mineral deficiencies. That can be easily verified with your normal blood work.

I love Pickle Juice and yes it’s salty but so are Protein drinks! My Nutritionist suggested that I make pickle pops so I froze the pickle juice in pop container I think they were Sesame Street ones because that was all I could find and I ate them the ice forced me to eat them much slower as a precaution but it turns out my body likes them as much as I was craving them and I ate them... eventually I got tired of them and moved on to power-aide sugar free... and then sugar free Jell-o

Just had my first post-op appointment (12 days out of surgery) and I was given permission to have a pickle if I wanted, so I think you are good to go (though based on the age of this post at this point I'm sure you have done it)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
