Something Not Addressed

Recommended Posts

I've a question- before you have weight loss surgery do you have to do a colon prep like before a colonoscopy? I feel like I should already know the answer but I don't really. It seems like it would make sense, especially if you were having gastric bypass or a duodenal switch where your intestines are going to be manipulated. So does anyone have an answer?

I had gastric sleeve and we were NOT required to do a colon prep.

That said, the final 5 days of our 2 week liquid diet...we did shakes only. Except for the night before surgery...when we had to drink a TON of white grape juice.

My surgeon didn’t require a pre-op liquid diet or a colon prep. A colonoscopy was required, luckily though I had one a few years before so he just used my records from that one.

I had RnY and my surgeon did not require a pre-op diet or colon prep. One day prior to surgery I had to eat a liquid diet ('full' liquids up through lunch, Clear Liquids lunchtime on and then nothing to eat or drink after midnight - my surgery was at 10am the next morning). And no colonoscopy either...so my colon was pretty much left alone :)

OMG, after having my port put in and suffering through concretions from hell as a result of fentanyl during anesthesia? I thought I was gonna have to take a pick axe and back hoe to my hiney in order to budge 'em out of the poop chute!

I tell ya, I would do a bowel prep for a frickin' hang nail or root canal! I'd want that sucker clean as a whistle with not a trace of anything solid that could turn to concrete. LOL. I will personally do Clear Liquids for 3-4 days pre-op and prep early and often to keep it from happening. :D Um, have I been perfectly "clear" on the subject? ;) hehehe.

Tomkitten last month had a colonoscopy, bowel prep made him go 18 times. Among the clear liquid suggestions was lemon or lime Jello, all that pooping and when he got his pictures back, yeah they give you sheet with color pictures of your innards. At any rate in 1 there was still a small puddle of lime jello showing. He's going Whattt? Turns out all he's got is a small amount of internal hemmoroids, told him he should be grateful he' d never be pregnant and pop them suckers out.

I have to take Milk of Magnesia at 4pm the day before surgery, that's it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
