To the Nuritionist I go

Recommended Posts

I'm getting ready to go to my first meeting with the Nutritionist this am. Very anxious to see what she has to say and what she wants me to do. One step closer to being banded. Have almost all pre surgical requirements filled:)

I lucked out and got to see the nutritionist right after my initial consultation with my doctor. All she did is discuss my pre-op and post-op diet with me and make sure I understood it. She also discussed the chewable vitamins I should take, all of which I already had bought because of information from this board!

I had to see the Nutritionist six monthly visits as an insurance pre-requisite. Like you, I expected a diatribe of information about food, a sort of mini-lecture monthly.

But my Nutritionist was a huge let-down. The first visit was an hour, discussing life styles, eating habits, exercise, etc. and she handed me a diabetic handbook so I could learn which foods contained Protein.

Beginning visit 2, I had to do a food chart daily, whereby she was mostly concerned with the calories and Protein intake daily. Each month she asked me to reduce my daily intake by 100--whoopee (and visits 2 - 6 were 15 minutes only)

My disappointment came when I asked her about food supplements, specifically whey protein isolate versus whey protein concentrate versus rice protein. She didn't have a clue!! She simply said "I didn't learn that at college--because that's alternative".

Good luck to you...

The Nutritionist was great. Very nice and easy to talk to and very Knowledgeable. I was actually surprised by her medical Knowledge, she impressed me. My new diet is very simplw and easy to follow.

Next appointment I only have to wait 2 weeks for and then I can schedule my appointment with the Surgeon and get a date for surgery:).

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
