Food intake, how to tell when full

Recommended Posts

I was sleeveed Nov. 23rd, which was a revision from Lapband that was removed in July. I did great drinking post surgery and then mushy foods. I have lost 17 pounds but have been in a stall for a week and a half. With the lap band, I had a lot of regurgitation due to a slipped band. Now with the sleeve, I will eat small portions of meat, I am usually hungry, so I am thinking I am eating quicker than I should, I have been chewing thoroughly or so I thought, but usually 10-15 minutes later, I have the need to throw-up as if I ate too much, and it does come up. How do you know when you are full and how long are you taking to eat cut up meat? I am not on normal foods and slowly and trying to add in. I noticed I am not getting in all of my liquids since adding back in some normal foods as it takes about an hour + before I can start drinking again. How do you differentiate b/w head hunger and actual hunger? I know these are newbie questions, but I think the lapband created this PTSD with the vomiting, lol. I am going to start logging my food and was thinking of trying the Keto diet too. Any thoughts, tips, recommendations would be appreciated!

Figuring out when I was full was also a challenge for me at that point after my surgery. Your stomach isn't sending normal signals yet. I'd suggest taking 30 minutes to eat 2 oz of dense Protein at your stage and chew, chew, chew. It feels ridiculous, but it really is the best way to avoid vomiting. I know if I am truly hungry vs. having head hunger if it has been a couple of hours since I have eaten, and it's not triggered by seeing food, thinking of food, etc. Everyone is different, though. You will learn your own signals. Really work on fluids - thirst can feel like hunger, too. Good luck!!

I'm still pretty new at this, but have the same problem. I have been pre-measuring portions to make sure I don't overdo it and then taking big pauses (5 - 10 minutes) during the meal to see how I feel. The second I feel anything (slight fullness, discomfort, pain) then I stop immediately. So far its working pretty well. meat does seem to be the hardest as I think its the least forgiving. Chewing 25 plus times also gives some time to think about how things feel, with meat I usually put down the fork, chew and then wait a bit between tiny bites (I use cocktail silverware). I've heard it can be months until real feeling comes back.

oh wow you can eat meat already? it's so interesting how each surgeon's plan is so different :) I'm still on soft/pureed foods and just added in fish this week. I don't get to each chicken until next week which then I'd be 4 weeks out.

I can sympathize with the not knowing exactly when I'm full though...I try staying with my 2oz meals but always feel a little hungry so have gone to 2.5 or even 3 if need be..my surgeon says to start there and eat until full only...I just try to wait between bites but without meat, it doesn't take too long to eat what I'm having...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
