I just checked in for my surgery today. The registration person said this is an outpatient procedure and I’m going home this afternoon!!! This comes as a huge surprise and makes me nervous? Aren’t IV fluids and pain meds important the first couple days???? I’m very nervous going home today. Did anyone else have an outpatient vsg?

It all depends on your doctor. I was outpatient for my lapband. Then outpatient for my band to SIPS DS revision.

I had my foot reconstructed as an outpatient procedure. I can be done :-)

My sleeve was a same-day surgery...I was operated on at 9:00 in the morning and discharged to home that same night. It's a 30-minute, relatively minor surgery.

You'll take pain medications at home. You'll sip on water at home.

There's really no reason to spend multiple nights at the hospital unless you're having complications such as uncontrolled nausea or severe pain.

They'll keep you overnight if you insist, but other than unforeseen complications, you'll go home the same day you were sleeved if it's an outpatient procedure.

It definitely depends on where you get it done. I was in from Monday until Thursday, would have gone home on a Wed., but couldn’t keep anything down.

I would not have wanted it to be outpatient surgery, it may only be a 30 minute surgery but it is still MAJOR surgery. You are getting an important organ excised by 85%. I was monitored by an excellent nursing staff for pain, liquid intake, given blood thinner, etc.

Good luck. Keep in close touch with the surgeon's office - they might only have ONE nurse on call. Do guard yourself against dehydration which can happen very quickly and it's very hard to get caught up with on your own once it happens, you just can't sip your way out of it once you are dehydrated in those first 7-14 days.

Mine was outpatient as well but then the start of my surgery ran 2 hours late so they ended up keeping me overnight. I really didn’t need it but I think after a certain time of day they just keep you rather than trying to do all the paperwork to get you out on the night shift.

I had sleeve and a hiatal hernia fixed. I would have LOVED to go home the same day! They kept me in the hospital overnight, but I got outta there as fast as I could the next day. I never felt sick, never nauseated, had no problems getting my fluids and protein shakes down. I would have been a really good candidate for outpatient.

That said...I know a lot of folks do require some extra care. I hit the ground running. Wanted to walk as soon as I was out of recovery. Took a shower bright and early the next day, blow dried my hair and put on street clothes and make-up. Wanted OUT. LOL.

But again...have to say I probably benefited from good pain meds over night, I got a good night's sleep, and had the reassurance of good blood work and anticoagulant injections. Was also kinda fun to walk the halls like a maniac with the other sleevers.

I definitely wouldn't have done well as an outpatient, I needed. The biggest issue had was swallowing oral pain meds due to the hiatal hernia fix, so if you're not getting that it might be much easier. Just make sure you can take them before they send you home, otherwise things can escalate quickly (I went home, couldn't take pain meds and had other issues due to that land me back in the hospital the next morning.

Mine was outpatient and I loved it. I was the first patient of the day and first patient home. I loved being home and being able to sleep in my own bed.

Thanks everyone. They are keeping me here two nights after all. I had a hernia repair at the same time as vsg. Not sure if that impacted their section. I try to get up and walk around for about 15 minutes every hour, but the gas pain is still awful (even with morphine!). No vomiting yet though, so that’s good. There is no way I could’ve gone home yesterday. They haven’t even let me eat ice yet, so I need the IV fluids!! When do gas pains go away approximately?

Then more you walk the sooner the gas pain will go away.

They might have meant it’s outpatient because you’re in the hospital for less than 24 hours. I checked in for my surgery (VSG) at 11:30 am last Wednesday and they told me I could go home at 1 pm on Thursday, so it’s possible.

I was outpatient too. I've had several laparoscopic procedures before and the gas pains are usually worse than any other pain!! Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference. Walking is truly the best way to get rid of them, usually gone after 3 days or so with me. Take advantage of the care you're getting in the hospital! Feel better soon!
