Like others said I would get a different PCP, especially since they will be managing your health post surgery as well. I actually was referred to my program by my OBGYN and so she did my referral letter but my PCP as been very accommodating as well.

It isn't just a matter of.....This doctor won't do what you want so find one who will. That's not it. It's a matter of....your doctor isn't keeping up with emerging developments in healthcare. She is rejecting a therapy that is supported by empirical evidence...based on her own subjective prejudices. That is NOT science, it doesn't support her commitment to continuing education (something that is essential for healthcare!), and that is enough to make me doubt her competence in other areas of healthcare as well.

My Rhemitoidoligist said he was dead set against getting the surgery. Mind you i was diagnosed with Rhemitoid arthritis 2yrs ago and have been on two different medicine since. I went ahead with the surgery down 36lbs and off both meds as of now. And havent missed them. I go back to him Jan 5 and hope Im down a few more pounds and see the look on his face when he reads my blood work results. Cause Im feeling great these days. And Im sure the more weight that come off, Ill feel even better.

Just an update...this same doc diagnosed me with acid reflux (which I know I don’t have), and ordered an ultra sound just to make sure I don’t have gallstones.

I get the ultrasound back and my gallbladder is full of stones. My doc calls me and tells me that even though I have gall stones, she still thinks it’s acid reflux so she won’t give me a referral to a surgeon until I’ve tried several weeks of meds for acid reflux.

I went to a stomach specialist for a second opinion and they said that without a doubt, I am having gallstone attacks, and don’t have a single symptom of acid reflux. I am scheduled for surgery next Friday to get it out. And the kicker....the meds my doctor wanted me to take can actually do damage if you don’t have acid reflux (per the specialist)!

Needless to say, definitely time for a new doctor, for several reasons.

@Stella S Seriously -! I know there's a lot to keep up with for FPs, but bariatric surgery is really having a moment and its borderline malpractice to not put forth some effort to learn the latest.

Fire that doc and find a new one. Your body, your health. You have the right to get the best care for you, and it doesn't sound like that doctor is giving you that.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
