So, WASaBubbleButt...

Why do senior citizens get a discount? Is it because they are low income, simply have paid their dues over time, or is it because they typically don't eat as much? Im really not sure. Most of the seniors I know have a lot more in their bank accounts than I do.

Just curious...because I don't know the reasons behind a senior discount.

A place has the option to honor or not honor a card like a lapband card. You might do well to just call places ahead of time and ask whether they do, vs showing up and not knowing and being told no. Then you have the option of whether or not you go there at all.

I would consider it a sign of respect for your elders. Yes, they have paid their dues and most do not have much in the bank.

Hi everyone.

I ran into an issue last Friday night. My brother turned 40 and a bunch of us went to the Tulalip Casino in Marysville for dinner. I showed my Lap-Band card and asked for a discount. I was of course denied!

So, has anyone had success with this? My wife and I do like to dine there with friends once in a while but I do not want to pay $16.95 to eat a few bites of food. It's tough to get a whole group to change the place to eat. I guess if i cant get them to give me a price break i will sip on Water and enjoy the company.

I did write an email to them asking to consider a discount for lap-band patients...no reply so far.

If anyone wants to email them.... here is the contact page on their web site. Maybe if we join together we can get somewhere.

We asked about a discount last time we went, I love their buffet and the outlet stores nearby, and they said they had gotten lots of requests, but were not considering changing the policy. So, we don't go anymore, because it's just too much money for what we can eat.

I don't agree that normal size people will gorge themselves just because they are at a buffet. That's more "fat thinking" vs. normal size person thinking. I mean let's face it, it's because of the normal size people that the creation of the doggy bag came to be. Fat people tend to take full portions of each item, thin people tend to take a few bites of everything.

Bottom line for me is that they did not charge us more when we ate more, I feel it is unfair to ask them to charge us less because we eat more normal size portions. They have a set fee, eat all you want for "X" dollars. That might be a lot, it might be a little. The price is the same. If you don't want to pay it then go to a non-buffet type place.

So many claim they don't want to be singled out anymore due to food issues and size issues yet they are the first one in line with that silly card in their hands wanting freebies or reduced meals. Were these same people asking to pay more when they were eating more than their fair share? I'd bet that's a no.

I have a strong sense of right and wrong and reduced fees for our 'closer to normal' portions vs. fat portions seems very wrong to me. Besides, I got this surgery so people wouldn't single me out for food issues. I'll be darned if I'll start passing a card around wanting special treatment because I needed WLS to refrain from filling my face with far too much food.[/quot WE DON,T HAVE A DISCOUNT CARD HERE AND IF WE DID I WOULDN,T USE IT AS I AGREE WITH WHAT YOU SAY ABOUT THEM NOT CHARGING US MORE WHEN WE EAT ENOUGH FOR THREE PEOPLE HOWEVER I MUST SAY THIS, MY HUSBAND IS A SLIM MAN WHO NEVER OVEREATS HE STOPS WHEN HE,S HAD ENOUGH EXCEPT AT A BUFFET RESTAURANT HE TRULY DOES EAT TILL HE IS STUFFED EVEN MANAGING TO EAT MORE THAN ME WHEN I WAS PRE OP AND THAT,S A SERIOUS AMOUNT. HE WOULD OFTEN FEEL ILL AFTERWARDS AND SUFFER INDIGESTION, YET WHEN I ASKED HIM WHY HE DIDN,T STOP WHEN HE WAS FULL HE JUST SAID "BECAUSE IT,S THERE AND YOU CAN KEEP GOING BACK SO I,M GONNA GET MY MONEY,S WORTH"CRAZY MENTALITY I KNOW BUT THAT,S JUST HIM,...LOL WE JUST DON,T DO BUFFETS ANYMORE WHICH IS JUST AS WELL AS HE MIGHT FEEL HE HAS TO EAT MORE SINCE I WON,T BE EATING MUCH HE WOULD HAVE TO GET BOTH OUR MONEY,S WORTH.....LOL

Probably because they are on a fixed income. What makes you think "most" have a lot more in their bank accounts than us? Got any stats to back that up? Perhaps those that you personally know do but I'll bet if you take the average senior, they aren't exactly swimming in money with that $800 a month income. When they were saving for retirement a loaf of bread was probably $0.30. Stocks have taken a huge tumble, Medicare doesn't pay for nearly what it should, they typically have to pay for all their Rxs unless they get a $500/month secondary policy, and yeah, they've paid their dues.

How much money are you saving in groceries because of your surgery? I know I save a ton. If I want to go to a buffet I don't ask for special favors because I have an eating disorder. Should anorexics ask for discounts? What about bulimia? They aren't actually going to USE their food, shouldn't they get a discount? What about mentally retarded people? What about blind people, what about everyone else in this world with their own disorder? Where do you draw the line? Who should get discounts?

Since you have an eating disorder are you using less of their overhead such as air conditioning/heating? Do you use their tables, chairs, staff, dishes, and all the other parts of overhead? food isn't their #1 cost.

Did you ever ask to pay more when you ate more? Why not?

I do not want to pay $16.95 to eat a few bites of food. I guess if i cant get them to give me a price break i will sip on Water and enjoy the company.

I was thinking about this....

I went to Vegas (pre-band) and paid 28.00 for a buffet. I wasn't that hungry but everyone wanted to go there, so I wasn't able to eat more than one small plate. (I did not eat 28.00 of food.) I still had a really good time with my husband and friends. The time we had there was priceless; I wish I could get into it here but I can't! I never laughed so hard in my life. If I was just sitting there sipping on Water, and "enjoying" the company I don't think it would have been the same.

I don't want stop living just because I have a band. If you made the commitment to go to the buffet why did you just drink water? You see if I was at that party with you I would wonder why you were just drinking water, and you would get a lot of my attention. (I am just being honest.)And that is bad because the party isn't about you. If I was the host of the party I would also feel bad if you were just drinking water at my birthday party. And that is bad, because no one should have to worry if their guest are having a good time. I think drinking water at the party might have been a little passive agressive. I know you were upset at the restaurant, but what lesson did you teach them? They are not hurting for business.

Also seniors discounts are not on the same page as a person with a lap band. I know from a marketing stand point that seniors eat earlier than the dinner crowd, so most places started offering seniors discounts to fill in the gaps between lunch and dinner. If we start giving discounts to lap band patients where will it end? My friend who is so thin can only eat maybe half a plate of food, should she ask for a discount? Because according to your theory she is being ripped off, or should she stuff her face to get her monies worth?

I actually got my card today hah.

I don't plan on using it 1. I would feel akward 2. I like to-go stuff.

My suggestion for casino buffet.. get comped ;)

I've never paid for casino food a day in my life. You don't even have to gamble a lot to get enough comps to eat. Just bat your eyes at the pitboss!

To be honest, and most respectfully, I think this is a remnant of the "fat mentality".

You were more than happy enough to pay $16.95 and eat way more than your body needed and now you're still wanting to get your money's worth out of your food. When you ate enough for 2 people in your former life, that was every single bit as wasteful as paying $16.95 and eating only a small portion is now.

Time and time again this question gets raised here and I truly believe you have to get to the point where you dont care.

So what? $16.95 to enjoy a night out is not outrageous. Who cares how much food you actually eat?

I think that if you are that bent on going to the buffet with your friends that you should suck it up.

YOU are the person with the Lapband, and therefore YOU should have to make concessions if you still want to go to a place with all your friends. Business are not obliged to give you a discount because of something you can or cant do.

The only solution to this would be to find a restauraunt that weighs you when you come in the door, and then weighs you on the way out and charges you by the weight of the food you ate. I dont know of any place like this.

I would be too embarrased to even ask for a discount and show them my lapband card (if I had one). Be empowered in knowing that you can go to the buffet and not eat yourself to death.

If it was really worth seeing your friends you would spend the money and go. Stop being so cheap.

LOL.... you guys crack me up. I love the internet. Not one of you can read my tone. Am I upset with the buffet? No, not really. That is where they wanted to go so I went. Some of you think it's my issue. Your right...it is.

I just wanted to go hang out with friends and family and not embarrass them by eating so little and paying $17 and not embarrass them by not eating at all. Maybe by the time Ive been banded as long as some of you I will understand the Bandsters Code of Ethics.

That's not really true, I can read your tone. You haven't been upset with any of us or the comments, usually this topic turns into a bit of a war. It hasn't.

I do believe you are a little miffed with the restaurant or you wouldn't have asked us to email them and help the cause. I just happen to disagree with the cause.

Why would you embarrass anyone by your quantity of food? This is a lifelong issue and if they are embarrassed over your portion sizes, they probably need to get used to it. I know that when I go to a restaurant I don't pay the least bit of attention to what anyone is eating or how much they are eating. I couldn't care less. I have a hunch most folks are like me in that respect.

Also, it's not a bandster's code of ethics. It is a matter of personal opinion. I think if I were a restaurant manager I wouldn't give bandsters discounts. I doubt many ask to pay triple the fee when they ate enough for three people. That's how buffets work, some eat less, some eat more. It balances out.

If I was a manager I'd be giving old people discounts, blind people, mentally retarded people. Not folks that are finally eating more normal size portions of food.< /p>

Either we want people to stop singling us out for food issues (ever feel like the fat person that just walked into a room? I sure did!) or we don't. But to want to BE normal we have to PAY like normal people and not ask for special treatment.

I'm all into saving money but I already do. In my overall grocery bill. The enjoyment of the evening is also the cost of the meal, not just food. It takes a long time to get over the fat mentality and I'm not really sure any of us get over it completely. I don't know. But I know I have come a very long way in the last year and I didn't do all this hard work so I could continue being singled out for fat issues.

Gaffer,

Changing the subject here.... I see the "$16,000 man" under your name. Are you self pay? Just curious. Here it's about 18k. I have seen other places over 20k. I went to Mexico. The only way I could afford it. I think the benifit outweighed the risk.

You have some great points. We all come from different backgrounds and have very different opinions. I felt a little bashed from your posts but it's all good. I got some good info from the thread.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
