GREEN POOP (sorry, TMI...lol...but seriously, I need to ask about this)

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 6 of my pre-op liquid diet. I'm surprised I'm pooping at all, since all I'm eating is Jello, broth, fluids and Protein Drinks (and 100 calories of cream of wheat per day).

Recently, I've started having greenish, kinda loose bowel movements. This was pretty alarming to me, cause I've always been told to associate green poo with infection.

However, I've done some searches of different bariatric sites and found several people reporting the same weird green poo.......typically around day 6! At one of the sites, a doctor responds that this isn't a problem. Could be caused by bile and vitamins...and that it's fairly common.

Has anyone else experienced the alien poo during the liquid diet?

It also can be the coloring of the jello you are eating. If you are eating lime or lemon jello those dyes will cause a change to your stool.

Even though you’re not eating solids, the digestive tract still sheds cells and eventually the waste needs to leave the body. What you intake can effect the color. Everyone is different when they have their first bowel movement ....3 days, sometimes a week or more.

Green poop is normal, Even though you went on a liquid diet before surgery you did not fully clean your intestine. Also, don't be alarmed if it turns black. That is the blood from the surgery and if you are taking Iron pills that will also turn it black.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
