Dizziness and Period

Recommended Posts

(Sorry for the long post) Hi ladies, I have a question about menstrual period and dizziness. Today I'm 5 weeks post-op gastric sleeve. I had a little of a rough start, regrets, readmission for dehydration, pain with eating and drinking, but I've been talking with my doc and support groups and they tell me these will pass, and I'm seeing some small improvements everyday. On Friday I started my period and it's my first since surgery and it made me severely dizzy so much so that I was holding the walls going to the bathroom, this morning the same, it's when I first wake up and if I bend over, then the dizziness isn't as bad as the day goes by. I have a history of heavy periods before surgery, I have fibroids. My hemoglobin was normal 2 weeks post-op with my PCP, and I'm taking my Vitamins regularly. I'm managing 60-80gms of Protein and about 50mls of Water, but only about 500 cal of food.....its a struggle. I was wondering if the blood thinners I took fo 14 days post-op has anything to do with it. I never experienced is dizziness before, and it's kind of freaking me out, has anyone else?

I have a history of heavy periods and dizziness and I have not yet had my surgery. When you started your period, was it on the heavy side still?

Yes, it was heavy, I've tried the pill and an IUD prior to my surgery but both didn't work out for me. I just deal with the heavy flow, but I never experienced the dizziness until after surgery with this first period post-op, which scared me.

In addition to the Water intake, make sure they test you for anemia! You lose so much Iron with your period and since you are getting barely any with your food that might be causing a problem. When you take your iron, see if you can eat something with Vitamin C with it to maximize your absorption.

I manage my heavy flow and cramps with boiling Water, and add cinnamon and a few drops of honey for taste. Cinnamon has properties in it to shrink the blood vessels and slow up the bleeding. It works for me all the time...or drink Organic apple cider vinegar with the mother in some room temp water about 2-3 times a day while I am on my period. The cinnamon may be quicker to help you. My mother also has heavy bleeding and I have her on this too and it helps her. You may also want to talk to you doc about checking your for anemia...Losing all the blood..you need to get on some Iron to build your blood count.

Thank you, I never knew about the cinnamon, I'll try that. I have been taking Iron every day, but I didn't know about taking it with Vitamin C for the absorption, great info! Thanks again, also today (day 3 of period) I didn't feel dizzy at all so that made me happy.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
