Pre-Op Diet Starts Tomorrow. SO confused and overwhelmed.

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is November 9, 2017, and my surgeon only requires us to do a ONE week pre-op liquid diet, which begins for me tomorrow. However, to test the waters I started it today instead. I'm HUNGRY, and I can't keep anything straight... grams of this, ounces of that... I'm overwhelmed. All my life I've struggled and fought to have ANY kind of organization, and I usually fail and make things worse when I try, including keeping up with the dietary guidelines.

Biggest problem is hunger right now. Ugh. I've 60g-80g of Protein, for one thing (on the paperwork), but in our nutrition class she said it was okay to go over a little bit to 100g. So which is it? I've made so many calls to her to clarify things, and I'm still not clear on anything. Sees in order to not go over the protein maximum I have to mostly eat SF Jello, popsicles, etc.... which leaves me hungry. This is rough, I have to admit, especially with all the stress from the confusion. :(

I'm having a lot of trouble just keeping up.

I was starving the entire pre-op diet. You're lucky you only have to do it 1 week. I had to do it 2 weeks with the same restrictions! Not gonna lie, it was awful. The only thing that got me through was why I was doing it.

Does your nutritionist respond to emails? If so I would send her an email asking if it is okay to consume 100 grams of Protein a day. Then you will have it in writing to refer to.

I would have to agree. Get it in writing. I was told 1 palm size portion of Protein (or two eggs) with one of the meals, loads of the allowed veggies and 2 Optifast shakes. That’s what I did - strict, VLCD for 2 weeks prior to surgery. I was only hungry some of the time but actually ended up enjoying the structure. Miss it now being 3 days Post Op and would give anything for a shake and to not feel like I’ve just entered a pie eating contest and feel so full and bloated I could puke (just from small sips of water).

It sounds like you've created a story about why you can't lose weight: "It's SO confusing! Might as well not even try! I'll end up a failure anyway!" Doctor's orders - like so much in life - is open to interpretation. Should you get 60, 80, or 100 grams of Protein daily? The exact number doesn't matter. Get between 60-100 grams & you'll be good. Consider how else this story is impacting your life & really learn to flip the script to achieve a different outcome. You are not alone. Good luck!

I would strongly suggest watching YouTube videos on WLS and go through this website with a fine tooth comb, read everything you can, research, ask questions, watch more videos 😇 I have been researching WLS, specifically VSG, over the last few weeks, and have not only learnt a lot but am super confident on what I want to do and what steps I need to get there.... and currently I'm 60 days out from starting my pre-op diet. Not saying I'm a pro and know-it-all, just saying that it sounds like more research/understanding/knowledge on your end will help you clear up your confusion. 🤗

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
