Recommended Posts

I’ve been referred to the Bariatric doctor my orientation is oct 26th I’m excited and nervous I’ve read and researched a lot about weight loss surgery my question is should I start working out and trying to lose more weight before my orientation ? What do they do at orientation ? How long does it take to get surgery? I’m going through Kaiser Permanente?

Thank y’all

Orientation usually shows you what types of weight loss surgery there are. It's a time to ask any questions you have. For mine, my surgeon ran the orientation and showed surgery videos of the sleeve and roux-en-Y gastric bypass. I also filled out forms about my insurance so the bariatric office could call them to see if my surgery was covered. It also covered some lifestyle changes that need to be followed. For example, cut down on caffeine, stop drinking soda and all carbonated beverages, start doing exercise (walking is great to start), start taking a Multivitamin, and limit sugar and carbs.
I went to my orientation on 11/2/16 and had my surgery on 6/21/17. It usually takes 6 months to a year to have the surgery. Your insurance will have specific guidelines you must follow and your surgeon will too. You will be jumping through many hoops before surgery.
Hope this helped! Good luck to you!

My orientation was a free 1.5hr seminar that the surgeon held, going over A LOT of information about the different types of surgeries available and answering a bunch of questions from us folks there. Before we all left, they scheduled consult appointments for us with the surgeon, where we could discuss our specific needs and type of surgery he would recommend. They also gave us a packet to fill out and mail back to them before the consult appointment, which asked for A LOT of info so that they could get started reaching out to insurance and any doctors etc etc.

For me, BCBS of IL on my plan doesn't require a 6mo supervised diet anymore, so from seminar to surgery date it'll be 2 days shy of 3mos. CRAZY fast, but that's also because I was on top of scheduling all of my pre-op doc appointments and tests as soon as I could, so I was seeing a different doc almost every week for awhile lol.

Just had my pre-op appt with my primary doc yesterday after work and he gave his clearance for the surgery! Now I just have my pre-op appt with my surgeon next Wednesday, and I'm ready for my surgery next Friday!

Good luck and definitely read a bunch of the threads in these forums! I'm a super organized researcher to begin with, but it was super helpful reading everything on here.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
