Mental Recovery Time

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'm scheduled for RNY October 30th and I have 2 weeks booked off work. I know there are many threads discussing recovery time from the physical aspect.

My question is how long does it take to be fully mentally alert as far as recovery is concerned? While I won't be doing any physical work during my time off I was hoping to be able to catch up on my courses which require a lot of mental effort.

Did you guys find yourself mentally exhausted after the surgery? How long was recovery from that aspect?

I would give yourself 3 days. I’m three days post op and while resting today could probably have tackled some technical reading.

Thanks! I appreciate your response [emoji4]

Do you think you're able to comfortably sit at a desk? Not for hrs on end but 30-40 minutes at a time.

Sure. Just make sure you walk about regularly.

I felt like I was a bit fuzzy for about 3-4 weeks. I wasn't completely out of it but I couldn't stay focused as long as I typically can. I just took a lot of small mental breaks throughout the day. I struggled a lot emotionally at first just getting used to everything so that certainly didn't help. I will say that once I got back to work, in my routine and using my brain on things other than the Water, Protein, Vitamins cycle I felt 100% better. Everyone is different so give it a shot but be easy on yourself if you are fuzzy for a bit :)

Day 3 you should be mentally able to tackle any work you need to get done. Great way to pass time while physically recovering

Thank you for the response!
I'm scheduled to return home on day 4 after a long flight so hopefully by day 5 or 6 I'll be feeling well enough to get some serious homework done

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
