What if I get sick before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Doing some deep cleaning before the surgery on 10/17 and there’s carpet in my bedroom. Dusted, vacuumed, moved things around, woke up some nasty dust bunnies...the end of the day I opened the windows and by bedtime I couldn’t breathe from one nostril it was so stuffed up and ended up pulling my CPAP mask off after 15 minutes because it was so hard to breathe.

Woke up fine this morning but now I have a sore throat and thats sometimes a bad sign for me due to my asthmatic bronchitis, but not always!! Anyway, I’m drinking ginger lemon honey tea and freaking out! Clearly I can’t have surgery if I’m sick...

If I get on antibiotics now “just in case” will they allow me to go through with surgery on them? I know they’re usually 10-14 days worth (the 5 day Z-pac doesn’t work on me) I hate doing that if I’m not really sick due simply to people’s abuse of them and the whole antibiotic resistance issue. And I don’t know what affect antibiotics in the body have in relation to VSG surgery.

Normally I’d wait it out and see how it progresses but I have this pretty important date in a week and I either go through with it or consider giving them enough time to cancel and potentially reschedule someone in my place

I guess I’m thinking out loud (!) and would like to hear your thoughts....many thanks

Think about it this way, surgery has a risk of infection anyway, would they let you go through surgery already having an infection which means your body will be more vulnerable?

People do sometimes get preventtive iv antibiotics on day of surgery, but i mean if you actually are sick or have a temp surgery will not usually go ahead. i have heard horror stories of people who lied about having a throat inffection brought there temp down themself before going in and ended up with alot of problems.

but your dr wouldnt just give them to you unless he felt you needed it so dont worry yet :) speak to your surgeon too as he may want to do something keep your fluids up i dont know anythign about your health concerns and things you mentioned about medical stuff so cant help

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
