5 days out Incision hurting

Recommended Posts

So I had surgery on Aug 10 and have been relatively pain free. However today my main incision is really hurting. It is not red but is really bruised. Has anyone else had this where everything was fine and then started hurting?

Yes - totally normal as it heals. My recovery was easy but several times it would start hurting out of the blue. Even like 5 weeks out. I thinks it's just part of the healing process. I hope it feels better soon!

Oh good! I was getting really worried. I have staples and every time it hurts I'm afraid I'm ripping one out. I go on Thursday to have them removed so at least I won't have that fear in my head. I have some topical lidocaine that I've just put around the area but not on top of the incision.

Thank y'all so much for the response!

I am 3 weeks post op and did great, but over the last few days my right side closer to the middle of my stomach has ached. I have been so worried that something happened internally. How long does the stinging last? At what point did you feel confident enough in your healing that you were not worried about leaks?

I asked my surgeon about my pain yesterday and he just smiled and said it will take a while. They cut through a lot of muscle that needs to heal.

I'm not sure I'll ever stop worrying about a leak, but I wouldn't think the stomach ache alone indicates a leak. I would never say ignore the pain though and I would definitely call my surgeon for peace of mind.

"Symptoms of stomach leak include: rapid heart rate, dizziness, shortness of breath, fever, worsening abdominal pain, left chest or shoulder pain, abdominal distention, the appearance of illness and a general feeling that something is very wrong."

Thank you gotime0810. Part of me is waiting for the failure to kick in and the other part is telling me things are fine. The head game is the worst. I want to be 100% perfect. This has to work and I don't want to mess it up. I always hear it is individual but I want hard data and info. Thank you for your support.

I'm feeling the same way. I know it is an individual journey and blah, blah, blah but someone please give me some hard goals and limits so I can tell if I'm doing this right. I have so many questions for my nutritionist appointment on Friday. I have a feeling I'll either come out feeling confident or more overwhelmed and lost. I recognize a lot will be trial and error, so not 100%, but I at least want to feel confident about the path. Hang in there. We can't be newbies forever (right?) :-)

Having the exact same issue! I was sleeved on the 7th and my largest incision hurts, especially when I'm trying to fall asleep and just can't find a position that's comfortable. I spoke with the bariatric nurse at the hospital on the phone the other day and she said it's totally normal and Tylenol should help. I'm still on liquids so she said to take the liquid one. And you're so right, the head game is the worst!! I'm so terrified of failure too. We can do this! We have to!!

About 4 days after op it hit me, couldn't walk! But by day 7 it was getting better. Now day 11, I'm up and about and practically pain free just the odd stabbing pain now and again

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
