I believe that there are a few of you on 9/12. I am on 9/11 at UCSF.

Yes, I start my liquid diet next Tues and am nervous that I will feel starved.
I hope this will not happen but understand the importance of it. I am anxious, excited, nervous, and ready!

Surgery September 6th. I only have to do liquid the day before. The program I am in requires participants to lose a certain percentage of their body weight over 6 months prior to surgery. My requirement was 12-24lbs. I've lost almost 40lbs! Whoohoo! My surgeon said some of the weight loss is from the liver. With what I've lost, my liver is smaller, making a liquid diet only necessary the night before surgery. I'm stoked!

Hi September Bypass Buddies,
I would like to know how many of you are doing the Sleeve versus the Bypass? I am a bypass on 9/11.
Cheers,

Surgery on 9/5. On Pre-op diet since 8/8 (4 shakes + 1 small low fat&carb, high protein&fiber dinner). I already lost almost 20 pounds since I started the pre-op diet . From 271 to 252 ! Today i went to my last appointment with the surgeon. We went again through the procedure and through the possible acute and chronic complications. He clarified that there is the possibility that he will need to open the abdomen if he can't lift the liver to reach the stomach. I am very very scared.

@zleng I understand the fears because I am very scared too. My surgery isn't until 9/11. I find that writing in this forum really helps. Good luck,

@zleng, my own surgery is the day after yours. It is scary and thinking about possible complications adds to the anxiety. Remember that the complications are unlikely to occur and that it is much more likely that your surgery will be textbook and go smoothly. Stay positive about it.

Hi everyone. First day on the forum! I'm schedule for gastric on 9/12! I'm a little worried. I will be out of town and will be getting into my pre-op late. I know we are on a liquid diet for two weeks prior. I will need to start 8/30. This will be before my pre-opt. Can anyone advise if you've tried any Protein liquids in prep for this?!

Hi @monica8773 ,

My surgery is 9/11 and I start my pre-op diet on 8/28. I have tried Premier Protein, Click Protein Powder, Bariartic Pal fusion powder and Medifast powder. My surgeon has me taking premier Protein and I do like it. Hope this gives you an idea of different protein powders out there.

I cannot believe that I in my stupid mind decided to have a major dental surgery a day before I started my liquid diet. What do you do when you are in pain? You eat of course. (You do this also when you are happy, sad, excited, anxious just to name a few but that's different story) So here I am in terrible pain and all I have is a Protein Shake to look forward to! It has been a miserable 2 days but I am sticking to it. I am telling myself that eating a slice of cake would mean that I will die in the operating table and it seems to be working.

I got a call from the surgeon's office yesterday and was told that my surgery had to be rescheduled. I was totally bummed since it moved from 9/6 to 9/13 and I had already started my liquid diet in prep for the 9/6 date. I really had my head wrapped around 9/6. Now I am working on resetting my plans and prep. It isn't the end of the world, just super frustrating.

Ugh! That is rough. Hang in there!!

I started my pre-op liquid diet today instead of Monday because I was ready to start. I am finding my tough times and I am making a list of things I can do instead of eat.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
