Grocery list: essentials for pre-op liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

Looking for suggestions for the pre-op (and post-op after the 28th) liquid diet phase. What are some essential grocery store items? What's your favorite Protein Shake? What are some go-to recipes? I'm nervous about this part. Thanks!

Hello. I am a 16 year old female and I had gotten the gastric sleeve surgery done on May 24th. I am 6 weeks out.

My answers for your question are as followed:

Essential grocery store items would be; Water, orange juice (MUST dilute with water), puddings (sugar free), sugar free Jell-O, and broth.

As for the Protein shake; Walmart has Premier Protein shakes. I personally prefer the chocolate and vanilla Protein Shakes. I've tried 5 different brands for protein shakes, and Premier definitely was my favorite.

As for some go-to recipes; Go on Pintrest and search Bypass Diets, that's what I did.

Enjoy your journey. Trust me, it isn't as bad as it seems.

Everyone's pre op diet is different. Mine would not allow sugar free pudding or orange juice. Premier Protein is the best, my favorite flavor is caramel. Better than bouillon for chicken broth. Sugar free popsicles. Sugar free Jello.

I had overlooked my need for salty stuff. So I would second broth, although I came to prefer buillion to broth. I also enjoyed some bariatric cream Soups (with protein).

I second the Premier Protein. One of the mistakes I made was to order a boatload of it. I was lucky, I ended up using it all (and have reordered), but they say that sometimes your taste buds will change after surgery. (Mine did more in regards to the broth than the shakes...)

So, I've survived day 1. My diet allows for sugar-free homemade custard. I keep 6 laying hens, so this is excellent news! I made something like this for dinner and found it to be fairly satisfying:

I've also discovered that I can have pumpkin Soup, Tomato Soup, Greek yogurt, and iced tea. I think I'm going to make it with my last nerve in tact (my kids have been jumping on it for years, and it's survived thus far). I'm going to make tzaziki (sp?), strain out the garlic and cucumber bits, then top homemade Soups with it. I will make this diet tolerable!

Oh, and I must find unflavored whey Protein Powder to add to the aforementioned Soups. Is there one brand that is preferable to another?

I see that folks do like premier, but do they make an unflavored version?

I use Unjury unflavored protein powder and I'm very happy with it. You can get it on their website at www.unjury.com. I also highly recommend their chicken broth flavored protein powder.

I like Syntrax Nectar for my Protein Shakes. I've tried many, that's the one that worked for my taste preferences. I have Crystal Sky, and I've also ordered the unflavored (which I've had a sample of before) to add to stuff.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
