Thirsty for water ALL the time!

Recommended Posts

It's been a week since surgery, and I find myself to be really really thirsty! Don't know if it's because of the heat but I crave cold Water 24/7! I make sure to take little sips but I feel like I'm drinking a large amount. I worry that I might be drinking too much water and maybe too fast..is it okay or normal?

Excessive thirst is a symptom of diabetes (just putting that out there) but it could also be from anesthesia as well. In any event, if it's not hurting you physically to drink that's great! Drink away! I too had no problem drinking liquids and at only three weeks out I can drink three good gulps with no pain.

Could also be the sodium content in your food.

I would honestly stick to no more than 4L (roughly a gallon) a day.. if you need more and aren't running marathons, and still having that insatiable thirst, something indeed is wrong.

Given you're a week out, it's very unlikely you're having too much. It might just be you spending a lot of time trying to get adequate Water and perceiving the time spent drinking to having tons of it, but you might not be having that much.

HI,

OK, so i had my Sleeve Op last Tuesday 6/6 and gradually been increasing my Water intake. Last couple of days I Have been taking about 4 mouthfuls every 5 minutes thats about 2 oz (4 X 1/2oz), sometimes I think I may drink in rapid succession about 10oz. I am staying on about 64 oz a day though as there are periods when I don't drink. My stomach does not hurt, but I am worried I am stretching it with the rapid intake of water, is that possible and do you think I have stretched it?

No. I thought that too but I asked at my follow up appt last week. Dr said it was good that it didn't hurt to drink and not to worry. I can almost chug water at three weeks out. Crazy!

Phew, Thank you.... if you were standing here I would hug you for that amazing news. Like everyone I so want this surgery to work that I do not want to jeopardise it at all. I suppose that is why I am nervous.

Lol! I feel you. I'm constantly wondering if I'm doing things right. I get so freaked out when I try something new and it doesn't bother my stomach. eggs seem to bother so many people. I can eat one easily. Scares me!

When they reach that soft solid stage they might just be uncomfortable with the restriction they suddenly feel. One egg was more than enough from me when I transitioned.

In regards to Water, I drink tons a day, but I can't gulp.. I can get away with one or two but if I go any more than that it starts making me feel sick. I used to absolutely chug water so this has probably been one of my biggest post-op changes.

It's okay to drink a lot of water, your doctor wants that. My doctor (one of the top surgeons in the US) said you will not feel restriction with water. But try and not guzzle, or it may hurt. Of course if it doesn't hurt then you're ok to go. Water heads straight passed a pyloric valve, so doesn't stay in the tummy, hence no restriction.

So drink up. I do. When you start eating it's harder to get all the fluids in, enjoy while you can.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
