First day at home... So scared

Recommended Posts

So, today is my first day home after surgery and I am honestly scared and overwhelmed. There's so many things to remember to do and notnto do, to take and not to take. I was able to do about 1 tbsp of fat free ricotta cheese today and I tolerated it just fine but I was scared to take more. My biggest problem is drinking. As soon as I get any liquid in my stomach, the cramping is unbearable. I'm assuming things will get better with time but right now I am so scared of failing.

It will take time, but not overnight. Each day gets a little better. But it took me 6 months after surgery to reach my "happy state" when all the problems seemed to melt away.

James, you always have such positive words for everyone. I thank you for that. I know it will take time and this is a huge adjustment. I think it's a matter of getting organized and a bit of trial and error.

You've got this!! Try different temperatures of liquids. I tend to do better with warm/hot liquids so I drank a lot of hot tea or warm broth post op to get my liquids in - still do especially on days when my tummy is being a brat. Just try a variety of things to see what works. And don't stress if you can't get everything in right at first. It took me a good two weeks or longer to get the hang of everything - Vitamins, liquids, Protein. It will get easier a little bit every day :)

You've got this. [emoji846] All it takes are baby steps. One step at a time. At least you went home. After I left the hospital I stayed with my mom for two weeks. I didn't even have enough confidence to be at my place at that time. So you're good. I'm over here struggling to get all of my fluids in and my Protein. It's getting better though now that they gave me something for this nausea.

The cramping sucks but it does get better. It used to floor me, but 4 months out now I don't seem to cramp at all.
You'll be learning a whole new way to eat and developing a new relationship to food. Take baby steps, chew thoroughly, and everything will be great!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
