Really appreciate your feedback! Can you please be a little more specific? A real world example would be fantastic.

Hey BariatricPal Members,
We’re developing a new BariatricPal tracking app, and we want to know what features you want in it! Can you please let us know the MUST-HAVE features? Here are a few questions to guide you.
-Are restaurant foods essential?
-What is the easiest way to enter foods? Do you want to have a dropdown menu appear as you are typing?
-Do you need to be able to enter custom foods and recipes?
-Which nutrients are necessary to be tracked?
-Should some nutrients be more prominent than others? For example, do you want the option to choose a certain nutrient (say, Protein and water), and be able to see a countdown of the number of grams of protein and ounces of Water to get to your daily goal?
-Do you want to set customized goals for calories and nutrients?
-What other goal-setting features would you want to see?
Please describe any other features you want to see. What makes a food tracking app worth it to you? What does the user interface (what you see) look like?
Can you please say what is absolutely necessary, and what might be nice, and what you would hate to see? Or…how would you like your user experience to go? Can you describe what your ideal scenario would be each time you use the app?
We want to make this the best tracking app possible, so let us know. You can be part of making the best diet and weight loss tracker yet! Thanks!

I think restaurants are necessary
Should have options as to what level post op you are. I have a week clears a week full liquids 3 weeks soft and moist then after week seven solids.
Should have suggestions for a day and reminders for water and such.

I'm using the fitbit app right now. Here is what they do well:

  • each food is available in multiple measurements and can accept any fraction as the quantity: e.g. 1/16 cup, 1/2 ounce, 1 medium apple, 1/4 large apple
  • you can enter new foods into database - entry screen follows nutrition label format
  • your history can be exported to Excel (although it is limited to 31 days which is a bummer)
  • you can tag favorite foods for quick access
  • in addition to protein/fat/carb grams, it also tells you percent by calorie
  • it tells you how you are doing towards the day's calorie goal - a Protein goal would be a nice addition
  • the database is huge!

Here is what is missing:

  • tracking if you took your daily Vitamin
  • inputting recipes
  • copying a day or a meal - because we have so many leftovers!
  • I would love to see other nutrients - like my ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 and Vitamins.

I'd like to be able to set meal-level goals to track volume (in oz, kg, etc.) in addition to nutrition and calories, as I'll be curious to see what my stomach can and cannot hold as time progresses. It would also be great if we could customize our ideal diet as prescribed by our surgeon or dietician and then track to how well we're meeting it.

1. Scan food packages.
2. Custom Food Recipes
3. Keeps track of macros (protein, carbs, fat, calories)
4. Water intake in oz
5. Goals for water and Protein intake.

Restaurant food really ought to be up to individuals. It's hard to input that info, unless it's a chain and I avoid those like the plague unless I know I'm going to screw my diet and eating up for the day.

I love Fitbit. I used My Fitness Pal but it lacks. The Fitbit has exactly what I need for food tracking, water tracking, exercise, plus challenges between my friends and I, as well as goals I can set for myself and awards (silly little trophies I win if I achieve my goals) these things make the app fun.

Not only goals, but let's you know how much over the goal you are. Some apps just tell you that you hit your goal (yay!) but really, I'd rather not go over my calorie or fat "goals". I also would like to see a calculation of micronutrients like Vitamins - as I input food, it keeps track of how much Calcium or Vitamin C or whatever that I'm consuming. BUT - it would need to be customised by the user for our bariatric needs. As most people don't need the extra Vitamin supplementation that bariatric patients do, I'm often told on other apps (well, Spark People only, since none of the other apps I tried do this) that my nutritional intake is off the charts. Also, no limitations on weight loss/week. Most apps prevent you from putting in a goal that's more than 2 pounds a week, but of course that doesn't work for us.

Ability to manipulate a variety of macro and micro nutrient goals. Menstrual cycle tracking (temperature, symptoms, days). Medication and Vitamin reminders and tracking. Ability to sync with personal fitness trackers. Exercise and step challenges. Ability to create group challenges. Water goal tracking. Weight tracking.

Not sure if it will be available for international users ( ex. Europe), but if so, please have measurements like 1 gram and 100 grams. Nothing is by portions over here, everything is by 100 grams. Same goes for liquid, ml, dl and liters.

The option of setting all values ourselves. By that I mean that we are all in different programs, so we have different guidelines that we have to follow. Some have to drink 30 min before eating, I have to drink 10-15min before eating. Some can have that many carbs, others can have more or less.

Also, when you add your own product, which I assume, coming from Europe, I'll have to do a lot in the beginning. Being able to edit if I have made a mistake and not have to add it all over again.

Agreed with everything above. I use SparkPeople for tracking because it has almost all the nutrients and I can track everything over time and export spreadsheets. The thing it won't let me do is track less than 1100 calories per day, and it doesn't track certain nutrients (sugar, Biotin come to mind).

Oh, and it is essential for me to be able to put in custom food and meals. I'm vegan and don't eat any processed food so I need to be able to put in the things I eat on the regular. Having a "favorites" section is very helpful!

The one thing I really want is better meal timers. I use Baristatic for timing, but it's not quite right. I need to eat one bite per minute, for 25-30 minutes. I can't set both at the same time in that app, and would love to be able to do that. I also would encourage heavy use of 3D touch for the Apple version of your app. With Baristatic, I wish I could 3D touch the notification and go to my next bite. Instead, I have to keep going back to the app and tapping "next bite." I do it, but it's really annoying.

Thanks for making this by the way!

Don't forget to let the user delete as well as add things. My Fitness Pal allows you to add foods to your list but not delete them!!

Absolutely Necessary:

--Calorie counter (how much you've had; how much remains)

--Nutrients: Protein, Carbs, Fiber, Fat, Sugar - I also like seeing the fat breakdown (saturated, monounsaturated, trans) and basic Vitamin and mineral info.

--Exercise input with calorie burn

--Food bank - this is HUGE! Having a good database and the ability to add personal recipes; restaurants; general foods; ability to scan packages such as Protein Bars and shakes, even those not in database to create a larger shareable database.

--Progress tracking for weight loss with reports so I can look back at the last year or five years

Would be nice:

--Sharing with friends

--Ability to take pictures at milestones and compare and use for motivation

--Sync to FitBit, MapMyRun, and other fitness apps.

--Yes to this: Countdown of the number of grams of protein and ounces of Water to get to your daily goal. With reminders!

--Track body-fat percentage; BMI; measurements

--Motivational reminders and stupid little sayings to log my food, eat more protein, get my fat butt up and exercise if I haven't logged anything, slow down on the carbs, chubby; those are cute and fun, do it right... make it fun, not like a drill sergeant, probably not with the name calling, since some people might not like that. Maybe make it so we can write our own? (MyDietCoach has cute ideas here)

Maybe but not super important:

--I had an app once that I put in rewards for myself, personal competition, when I hit a goal. It was fun, but the rest of the app wasn't as good as others, so I laid it to rest in dark pit of useless apps.

What I DON'T want/dealbreakers:

--Advertisements popping up. If the app is free but only due to adds, give me the option to buy the app without ads.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
