Big question out there to all of you Post Surgery folks. I am not scheduled for surgery until June 20th. I thought I had made up my mind that I would have the RNY bypass surgery, but now I'm wondering if anyone else out there had second thoughts about switching to a Sleeve surgery. I have read how so many of you have done so well and have lost a lot of weight with the sleeve surgery. The main reason I decided to get the RNY bypass was it, according to the staff at the mayo Clinic, I would loose considerably more weight that I would with the Sleeve surgery. I want to loose about 110 pounds and maintain. Anybody out there have an suggestions while I still have time to change. Help if you can.

I'm not post op, but my surgery is June 21st. I'm going with the bypass because I have severe GERD. My surgeon said the RNY is less likely to make it worse. I also researched it a lot and noticed that with the sleeve my GERD most likely stay the same or become worse.
One surgery is plenty for me. I wouldn't want to get the sleeve and have to turn around and revise to RNY. I have about 120 pounds to lose.
I hope this helps!
I'm looking for surgery buddy's if you are interested! Take care!

Hello Colleen, I don't appear to have any other problems. I am new to this Bariatric Pal site and I don't know if I have figured out yet how to navigate around. but if I can figure out how to get back to you I would love to have a surgery buddy. I you could help and tell me how to get back to you , like what forum I go to reach you, it would be helpful if we can go through this together. I'm 68 and I hope I can handle all of this. Please stay in touch and good luck to you. Since my surgery is scheduled one day before you, it would be nice if I could tell you how I'm doing, but that may not be realistic the day after surgery. I have been stocking up on Protein Drinks and anything else that I should have to be ready. I think my hardest thing will be the 2 wk pre-op diet.

If you click on my name here, it brings you to where you can do private messaging. Also if you hit the arrow in the top left side (you can click it a few times) and it will bring you to the place where you can check out the forums. They will be at the top of the screen. The first one is timeline and you can click that to see all the newest topics. Next to that is the forums. Click this and it will bring you to the different topics.
My name is Colleen. I'm 42 years old and my surgery will be the bypass. My surgery date I'd 6/21

I have to do a second surgical evaluation because I thought I had decided on the bypass but then I got cold feet and want to switch to the sleeve. I figure I could do another surgery if the sleeve doesn't work out...and mal absorption issues are kind of scary for me because I already have Vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

Sometime with the sleeve you can develops reflux, sometimes bad enough to need a revision. For that reason I went with bypass. One surgery is enough for me. Also, your insurance may not cover another surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
