Liquid Pre-Op Diet... What interval for shakes?

Recommended Posts

(Posted in the wrong surgery preop group I'm having the sleeve)

Less than 2 weeks from surgery and my official preop diet started Wednesday however I started a week and a half earlier to adjust because I knew I would need time. I did great during the time that I was doing it that I wasn't required to but now that I'm actually required to be on it I'm struggling with wanting food from already being on it so long. I do a shake every 3 hours for a total of 5 shakes a day. I get in a lot of Water but don't do any broth because the sodium in the broth makes me feel nauseous and shaky.

I'm wondering what others do/did as far as the timing between shakes. I'm thinking of switching to a shake every two hours with my last one being at 5pm but I'm worried I won't make it to bedtime if my last one is at 5 (I typically go to bed around 9-10:30 depending on how much me time I want after the kids go to bed). With the 3 hour intervals I currently do in between shakes I'm starving in between and that's when I want to eat something (and have over the last few days though it was only a bite or two of meat I still I want to be compliant to not run into any issues during surgery). I'm just trying to find ways to help make this as easy as possible and not be so hungry in between shakes that I eat foods I'm not supposed to right now.

Also that the fact that I haven't lost as much weight as I expected on the liquid diet has been hard but I remind myself that this isn't for weight loss and if I do have any it's a bonus so that's helping a lot but I'm still not completely there with being ok with the progress that I shouldn't even expect in the first place since the goal with this is to shrink my liver not lose weight. It's really showing me how much of a mental thing this will be also not just physical.

Just keep in mind if you up the amount of Protein Shakes like every 2 hours that's 12 a day they have approximately 160 calories. My doctors office only allows 3-4 shakes then water calorie/sugar free drinks broth with either no or super low sodium. It's hard but keep your eye on the prize....keep busy, drink more water, try sugar free Jello so it seems like ur eating....it is a mind adjustment easier said then done I will pray God gives u the strength and a good diversion to get through. My doctor (Mexico) said 3-5 shakes 700-900 calories per day so even if I do 2 hour intervals I would still only do 5 a day so one at 9am, one at 11am, one at 1pm, one at 3pm and the last at 5pm.
I'm currently drinking about a gallon of water a day to try and help but it's not lol... I don't know why it is about the sodium in the broth but it just doesn't sit well with me even the low sodium but I'm sure if I tried different ones I might find one that would work and I'm sure that would help with hunger. Thank you for your well wishes it's mind over matter right now and I just need to keep reminding my self why this is important

Get low sodium broth

I've tried it and the sodium is still too much although doesn't make me feel as bad... I might need to try a few brands and maybe Bone Broth and see if it's better.

Bone broth is much better. Doesn't taste like a box.

I'll have to get some this weekend

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
