Self pay so moving fast

Recommended Posts

Had my first appointment with Dr. Collier yesterday and today I set the date for November 1. Still have to go get lab work and final approval from my primary doctor (hope she goes for it with me). I guess I will go out and buy a Magic Bullet soon. I hope I'm not moving too fast but was afraid I would change my mind. I am excited but nervous too! What I'm afraid of most is not chewing enough. Hope to meet other November people here.:)

I am also a self pay. I was banded 3 weeks after my first consult. The three weeks went my so slowly, I wished I had been banded the same day as the consult !! I was really ready.

Anyway, I was banded on August 15th and I have already lost 29 pounds. You r gonna LOVE the band

Hello all...

I'm scheduled for November 12! It looks like we have a trend of self-payers in November. I go in for some breath test on Monday, and on November 6th I have an EKG, chest xray and blood work, plus one more visit with the dr and a separate one with the nurse. They just like to chat one last time to see if the patient has any issues. It's all included in the cost. That's all very comforting! My dr. is Dr Turnquest, in Houston. So far I love him!

Glad to see I'm not the only nervous one. I really think I'm doing the right thing but that doesn't soothe the nerves. Big question in my head is...can I change my life that quickly? Can I get my behind off the couch and into a gym? I didn't before. What will make me now? Can I take small enough bites? Stop eating when I'm full? I guess the first time the food comes back in the wrong direction I might be cured of that problem. :) Huh...I guess that's more than one question in my head...

Glad to have you all on this journey with me! ;)

Hi Goldie, Susan & Michee,

So glad to hear from all of you. I don’t feel so all alone. I have been having a hard time slowing down on the food since I set the date. I feel like I have to do it now because I won’t be able to soon. I know that’s wrong, I need to get my body ready for this.

Wow Michee—you are doing great! I hope I do as well as you.

Goldie, you are only a week later than I for the band. I don’t believe 48 should be considered a bad age to do this. It is not a waste of money! I am 54 and know I want to live with a greater quality of life than I have been for the past 10 years.

Susan, where do you live in Houston? I use to live in Friendswood and now I am north of Conroe in Willis.

Later gang,

Bobbi

I went to the seminar last night, have a meeting with the doctor and financial person on 10/12, and the ball rolling ASAP. I will also be self-pay. I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted from my shoulders now that I've made the big decision. I'm happy!! :clap2:

Hi, everyone! I'm a self-pay and getting my surgery on Nov 2. Very excited, nervous, not sure what the heck I'm getting myself into. But I swear to God I'm going to keep gaining weight if I don't do something drastic. It's either this or wire my jaws shut - I am not kidding. My sister-in-law got hers done last year and she looks like a movie star now - gorgeous! So it's helpful knowing someone 'on the inside'. I'm also nervous about not chewing my food enough and having it get caught. But s-i-l says do it a few times and you'll learn fast! It is not the best feeling in the world.

Does anyone else feel really nervous in terms of the surgery itself. Does anyone feel (and this is very dramatic) like they might die? I'm just so worried. Okay, that sounds very stupid, but there it is - my main worry, dying on the operating table.

Since I was self-pay, they booked me in so quick (like I see a few others here as well) and it does seem like my head is spinning a bit too (can't remember who said that). Can't quite get used to the idea that this is really happening.

Anyway, I'm so glad that there's this board and that we can all follow each other's progress and encourage each other since we're all doing this at the same time.

Michee - I noticed your surgeon was from Canada. Where are you from? I'm originally from Sask - just moved this year to Arkansas.

Goldie - Do you mean 48 as in years old and you feel that's too old? If so, are you crazy, girl? Didn't you know the 40's are the new 30's? Look at Oprah. How old is she - in her 50's or something - and she looks so awesome. You are going to be beginning a whole new life and you'll probably feel like you're in your 30's when all the weight comes off.

Glad to have found this board and all of you to chat with.

Can someone tell me how to do the ticker tape thingy? Keep in mind all I know how to do on the computer is type - not very computer savvy.

Linda

I'm not a self-pay but am also having my surgery on November 5th. I'm excited about it too. All except of course, the part where the food may get stuck, eating too fast, not chewing enough - and yes Linda, dying on the operating table. I have my DH, my daughter, who is pregnant for a little girl, due in December and my 9 year old grandson. I wouldn't want to leave them by no means. That is part of this procedure I really try not to think about - "the risks". I just want to go into it with confidence that everything will work out just as it is supposed to.

This site is a wonderful place to come share our concerns and to ask questions, look for recipes - find new friends. :-) I'm grateful that you are all here.

Hi everyone, I'm a self-payer, too. But that didn't speed things up for me one bit. I've been having medical testing and labs done since early March. Of course, in July, they discovered I had a Vitamin D deficiency, and that brought things to a stone-cold stop until I could resolve that situation. But, it helped me really get my head around the surgery and prepare mentally for it.

And, Lindata, I have to disagree, I've heard it from many sources (including the dishy Donny Deutsch on CNBC) that 50, not 40, is the new 30, so 40 must be the new 20. :) It's all good.

My surgery date is 11/2/07.

Hi mom,

It is nice to see someone using the same Dr as I am.

My first visit was on Tuesday and I am going to have the procedure done on Nov 8th. I am excited and nervous all at the same time. I look forward to talking to you more. I am hoping to make friends in the area with the lap band so we can help each other out.

Good Luck!

Hi Sherry,

Great! Where is the doctor going to do it? Conroe or Journey Lite?

I am on my pre-op diet this week. I went by his office yesterday to buy some more Protein drink. I now have chocolate and strawberry.

I would love to talk to you some day. Good luck to you!

Bobbi

I am not self pay but am having surgery Nov 9th. I am nervous about alot of things, dying is one of them. But I know that if I don't do this I will die from the weight.

I am nervous about the pre-op testing tomorrow. I hate upper GI's have had one before and it was awful. So I am stressed about that. I was wondering if anyone has had their testing yet and if they had to get the Upper GI and how was it? Be Honest please...LOL

I am anxious to get on with it, I have been waiting on the process since May, my surgeon and insurance require you go through an accrediated program and so I had to go to classes and psych eval and nutrition class and they make you wait and pretty much do a class a month.

I know it is a for life decsison and they want you to be sure you know what you are getting yourself into. I began working out at a new health club my DH and I joined then end of August. I have been walking in the pool 5 2 6 nights a week. Then WHAM I developed a rash all over my body. After two weeks of prednisone my Primary care doc thought it was due to the Chlorine in the pool, because it was going away and then I got back in the Water and it got worse. I had begun Water Aerobics class twice a week. I am so bummed because he banned me from the pool til after my surgery:)

I am glad that I am working up until the day of, because it helps to occupy my mind.

I am 45 been married for nearly 28 years and have 2 grandsons one is 4 and one just turned a year old. I want to be alive and watch them grow up and be able to play with them without getting winded, I want them to actually have a lap to sit on...LOL I want to feel alive again, because I haven't for a very long time.

I don't think you are ever to old for this surgery, it can take years off your death....by losing the excess weight........in turn adding years to our lives.....:).

I am glad that I found this place and plan on spending my recoop time here on line. I hate daytime TV...LOL

Kristin:clap2:

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
