When does eating feel "normal"?

Recommended Posts

I'm only 2 1/2 weeks post op, and I'm feeling great - no issues with getting in protein/liquids, but I'm wondering if/when food will stop feeling so heavy in my stomach. Or is that feeling just something to get used to?

I have a family member that is 10 years post op...she said she still doesn't ever really feel full...there's just a "rock" like sensation where her stomach is.

I'm 10 months post-op today and I've just started to feel normal when I eat. I don't feel my restriction much and I don't have as much burping/gurgling/etc with food.

Well, that's something to look forward to, I guess. Thanks!

I'm 2 and 1\2 weeks out as well. I had complication during my surgery that forced the doc to decrease the size of my stomach more than normal. I'm just now on 1\2 liquid and 1\2 soft. But everything I eat and drink feels like that rock mentioned above. You don't have any problem s getting your fluids in? I'm getting IV liquids 2x a week so far.🤔 Any tips for that?

Hi! It took awhile before eating was "normal" - there was a period of time where I didn't even cook for my family post op because I didn't wan to look at food, let alone have that "heavy" feeling and uncomfortableness. I can say that carbs are the worst!! They will sit heavy no matter how long since surgery....at least that's my experience. Once you are able to eat soft foods, and so on just really, NO REALLY...TAKE YOUR TIME EATING...it makes ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD!!! I thought I had slowed down eating and I had but you truly need to eat like a snail...lol It will help with the digestion and less heavy feeling. Good luck!!!!

For me, it's been all about temperature. I have found that room temperature and warm liquids go down easier. I also don't drink plain Water - I've been using Crystal Light and Mio to flavor it (both are sugar free). Before surgery, I hated that stuff, but for whatever reason it makes all the difference now.

Thanks! I'm still really struggling with eating slowly. It's so much harder than I thought it would be. Luckily, I have the rest of my life to work on it...

I struggle with eating slowly too! It's such a hard habit to get into. I've ended up sick my last couple of meals.

I think it is always going to depend on what your eat, the moisture content and the amount.

I can eat some things with zero restriction, other things are like a rock bu only if I eat too much. It just varies. You learn.

Yes. Eating slowly and chewing well are lessons that hit me in the stomach. Literally. If I don't heed them..
I use a lot of Soups and stews this far out. I get liquid and my body doesn't seem to reject it. Beans and split peas. Who would have guessed? Not me

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
