3 years out and I need help...

Recommended Posts

My 3 year mark is coming up on May 7th. My birthday is may 14th. Since having gastric bypass I have had skin removal and reduction. At that time I lost more weight but I have gained back some of my weight. I started before everything at 255 and now I weigh 165. My lowest weight was 139. At the time of my lowest I was still getting sick alot. And I still do sometimes. Now I am realizing I really need to get back on track. I really want to get back down to at least 145. I recently 2 weeks ago started really watching what I eat and drinking more Water. But I haven't seen the scale move in over a week. I am scared I am stuck here at 165. Now the only "vegetable" I eat and can stomach to eat is green Beans. I love chicken and shrimp. Any other ideas. Like Protein Drinks or diet plans. I am open to any suggestions.

I don't have real answers, just wanted to say that I am in a similar boat. Had the surgery about 3 years ago, lost 100 pounds but need to lose more. I have also lost my mojo when it comes to doing this right. Need to get on track. Have you tried the 5-day Pouch test? I tried it once and it was fine but didn't "reset me."

I don't know how to do this myself but what I want to tell you (or tell myself) is that vegetables aren't the big answer, just part of the answer. It's not like the old diets where eating veggies is the trick. Our trick is Protein. Protein first, then if there is room, the next thing in is veggies. chicken and shrimp are 2 of the really good things to eat. And chicken can be prepared 1,000 different ways. But, I would love to hear what others have to say.

Thanks for your reply and it nice to know someone else is in a similar boat as me. And it's not just me. I have also lost my mojo to do it right. The temptations are always around when you have young kids and not only that my work hours are never the same. I get off work pretty late no time to really cook anything healthy. I have tried doing the prepared foods but when I go to reheat doesn't taste good or just tired of eating the same thing for 3 days.

I'm with you too. 3 years on March 3rd. I lost over 100lbs but my low weight was 194 and I'm at 215 now. My doctor is happy with that, she said I am built large and I've built up a lot of muscle. I'd like to get back below 200, but I don't have much hope for being lower than that.

My issues now is I can't tolerate a lot of meat. chicken makes me gag. I found myself mostly living off French fries and carbs which is a really bad RNY diet.

I know I have to fix it, and I'm working on it. It's hard to do without meat. I am happy to say that I've been focusing a lot more of Beans and veggies recently. I still eat some lean meat and fish. I basically live on black beans at this point and try to fill up on a lot of veggies. I still eat too many carbs but I've replaced a lot of bad meals with good meals. I've not weighed myself in a while but my size 12 jeans had gotten kind of tight and they're fitting a lot better now. I'm glad it's summer, I'm exercising more and planning a giant garden. Best of luck to you both!

From everyone I talk to they say a big key to long term successful is to mentor someone just starting out. This will give back motivation to you as well as help another. In all things weight loss there will be these valleys of no change. You can exercise 5 days a week and eat great but your body will pick up on the routine and then expect that to maintain. So if you do less or eat more you gain. If you keep that routine you only maintain what you have. The trick is to change things up so that your body can't just settle and get comfortable. Keep it guessing as you get back into it. An example if this is soliders in PT they often have to change their routine from muscle failure to cardio or whatever so muscle memory has to be earned. I'm only 2 and 1\2 weeks post sleeve. So I don't know what your going through. But from the 10 years fighting to lose and hitting the gym everyday I learned that I can maintain my weight I just couldn't lose it. Luckily I started talking to anyone who would share their story for help. They helped me start this process and follow through. Motivation is hard for everyone but remember how miserable you were and the hard road that got you this far. Remember learning to eat all over again, the pain, and the discomfort. Remember what lead you to this in the first place and then choose... Start over or give up. My bet is your all fighters or you wouldn't be asking for support. I joined this chat cause right now I'm scared about next week thinking 3yrs ahead not yet. Maybe we can help each other.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
