Thinking about getting the gastric sleeve procedure

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I'm new to this site. So I've been thinking of getting the sleeve for a few months and I have done a bunch of research on it. I've made an appt to meet with a doctor but I was wondering what type of question should I ask her. If one of you could help me out I'd really appreciate it! Also I was wondering how long of a process is this like should I expect to have my surgery soon or does it take a while to get everything taken care of?

First of all it depends are you self pay or insurance I'm self pay so know nothing about insurance but from being on here it seems insurance can have a longer wait time as there's requirements like dieting and meetings
as I went private I saw the surgeon then when I had the money sorted I booked in for a few weeks away you can have it pretty fast I found
Questions to ask surgeon
What's best for me sleeve or bypass
due to current health issues
What to expect in terms of weight loss goals and time frames
Life going forward what does that look like eating habits social life etc
Questions to ask yourself after meeting doctor
Why are you doing it ???
is it sustainable for you for life
do you have realistic expectations
Theres alot to consider as its life changing and its surgery
it was the best decision I ever made and it's been very positive I've not had a negative experience and am very happy and wouldn't change it for the world

So my advice on what to talk to your doctor about:

- Talk about your weight.

- Are there any other comorbidities you have? Diabetes? PCOS? Liver disease? Apnea? Thyroid issues? Etc. If you don't know, find out. Get extensive tests/workups.

- Other medical issues, like fractures? Spine problems?

- What efforts have you made to lose weight in the past? Dietary changes?

I would advise getting a complete look at yourself medically and psychologically before going into such a life-changing surgery. The best decision is an informed one, not a rash/spontaneous one.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
