Hi everyone. I've been contemplating WLS for the past 14months and just completed the last of my 6month insurance weigh ins. I've had my heart set on the sleeve but after my pre-op scope my surgeon has diagnosed me with Barrett's Syndrome and recommends RnY instead. I'm trying to wrap my brain around the change and would love to hear more of the pros on my you all chose RnY over the sleeve. I worry about malabsorption and dumping.

Thanks for sharing!

Hello neighbor!(I'm south sound) I will be having rny in April. I personally chose rny because my family is plagued with diabetes. But also im comfortable that my surgeon is very experienced. He said the decision was mine, but he recommended rny for my personal health conditions.

I also went in thinking that I was definitely going to have the sleeve but right away the doc said he suggested bypass. I was surprised but then realized that he had way more experience in this than I did and I had to give up control and trust him. Turns out I have a giant hiatal hernia which will make it definitely be a bypass so I'm glad that I was open to it. Good luck!

Thanks! I went to a WLS support group over the weekend and talked to a few folks about this as well. I'm feeling more comfortable with the change. Just a last min curve ball that threw me for a loop :) Hoping to meet with my surgeon again this week and submit for insurance approval.

Hi!! I had my heart set on the sleeve. I had an upper GI done & was diagnosed with pretty bad acid reflux. When the nurse told me I couldn't get the sleeve, I told her I didn't want the surgery but I'd speak with the surgeon either way. The following day I went into a supper group where I voiced my concerns & many in the group actually had the RNY vs the sleeve. I was initially worried about malabsorption and future pregnancies. After that group and speaking with my surgeon, who everyone has high praises for. I feel more comfortable with getting the RNY than the sleeve.

Hi, I am having gastric bypass because I knew that I had Barrett's. I must go for another scope before surgery to check on it's progression over the past few years. A sleeve is not a good choice for anyone
with Barrett's or anyone who suffers from GERD.

Like several others have mentioned, my first choice was the sleeve. But during my gallbladder surgery a couple of years ago, my surgeon discovered I have a moderate hiatal hernia. (He's the same surgeon doing this surgery.) He strongly advised against the sleeve due to me having mild GERD and the hernia. The way he explained it is the small intestines will "anchor" the new pouch, preventing it from slipping back up through the diaphragm. The sleeve lacks that support and stands a greater risk of slipping back through it, and it usually happens within five years. Any GERD issues are often worse, and hiatal repair is a much more major surgery than WLS.

I'm not gonna lie: I still wanted the sleeve after he initially explained all of this. I changed my mind to bypass the same day insurance notified me of the approval. I don't want my mild GERD to (possibly) get worse, nor risk a recurring hiatal hernia. You'll hear others who have had the sleeve who either claim they haven't had any issues (which is quite possible) or have had revision to bypass later because of those issues.

For me, I want this to be one and done. Ultimately, though, you have to do what's best for you, but I hope our experiences have helped! [emoji4]

Finally got insurance approval!!!!! Officially have my surgery date set for 4/18. Things are starting to seem real now [emoji4]

Congratulations! It's surreal when you finally get the approval. I'm sure you'll do well if you've decided to go with RNY. I'm five days post-op myself. So far I have no regrets. I think this is the best decision we can make to take control of our health. Please keep us updated! [emoji4]

I don't understand, why a bypass if you had a hyatal? My surgeon did a sleeve and while in there saw I has a hyatal and fixed while he was in there. Is this not normal? Should I have had something different? I have no reflux after surgery and just never heard this

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
