Possibly switching to bypass because of GERD

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've been on the gastric sleeve forum for a few months but now I am coming over here because today I had my EGD and my dr. Said that I may have GERD. He took a biopsy and I will have the results some time this week. If they come back positive I will likely need to change my procedure to the bypass because of the high risk of heartburn associated with the sleeve. I've never really considered the bypass before so now I am all types

of nervous. My main fears are dumping syndrome and losing too much weight and looking sick. I have about 100lbs to lose. I've heard that bypass patients can lose a lot and and some times too much.

Can anyone offer any insight into these two things? I would really appreciate if.

Thanks in advance.

My advise it to listen to your doctor's team on how to prevent dumping. I am 7 weeks out and have lost 40 pounds and did not experience any dumping but was very careful about eating properly.

Relief from GERD has been a wonderful byproduct of my RNY.

Dumping only happens if you eat stuff you shouldn't be eating. So if you eat what you are supposed to eat, you will be fine! So no fried foods, no high-sugar foods. I also can't tolerate any of the sugar alcohols so that's made it easier to tame my sweet tooth

I was all set for sleeve as well. At my appointment last week they told me that since October, they have had 2 patiences that have had to have their surgeries revised to Bypass because their mild GERD went to severe. That was enough for me to start to change my mind.
I don't want dumping and was looking forward to an easier surgery but I keep thinking how great it would be to never have heartburn and reflux again.
I'm also very scared but I think I'm changing to the bypass. I also have around 100 pounds to lose.
When do you think you will have it??

The exact same thing happened to me, and I had the bypass 5 months ago. I'm really happy with my decision. I've lost about 70 lbs and feel great. I don't think its possible for me to lose too much weight, its more likely I will have trouble reaching my goal from lingering bad food habits.

I wouldn't worry too much about dumping. Not everyone gets it, and even if you do, you can still probably still have a couple of bites of dessert once in a while, you just can't go crazy. Honestly I think it is just another tool that helps you avoid eating junk that is terrible for you anyway.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
