Food aversion and dry heaving

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I'm about two months post-op. Feeling better every day but I'm noticing some new things happening. I've tried, on two different occasions, to eat some like a tortilla with guacamole and have immediately and I mean IMMEDIATELY been overcome with the urge to vomit. Nothing comes up oddly enough but i get intense dry heaving. I then am no longer really interested in eating and just go drink a Protein Shake.

I know that people's food preferences change after surgery but has anyone experienced anything like this? It's too the point that anything with a sauce or dip makes me queasy to even think about trying. Just the sight of it makes me sick.

Just wanted to see if this was temporary or if I should move on from trying those types of foods anymore.

Maybe it's a good thing! Those sauces are usually never good for us. I'm hoping chocolate does that to me ! I get sleeved March 23rd.

I've had a lot of my tastes changed since the surgery. right when I was able to start eating food I enjoyed the tuna immensely, but now I can't stand it... I definitely cannot eat tortilla because it expands in my stomach and causes me to feel like I'm going to throw up even if I nibble and she would a hundred times it still irritates my stomach everytime

I have been having a similar problem but mine occurs after I have eaten. I get that same nauseous feeling and I all of a sudden feel like something is stuck in my throat. I cough a lot and then it eventually sends me to to the bathroom to throw up but nothing comes up except a dry heaving or spit that looks like foam. I spoke to my nutritionist about it today at my 3 month appt. Since I am currently taking 4 oz. of food per meal she wants me to go down to 2-3 oz. for 2 meals and a shake for the third meal and I will be following up with my doctor in 3 days if no change. I'm hoping that this helps and there is no other problem.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
