When can I eat a salad?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery and according to my surgeon's directions, lettuce became acceptable at week 9 post-op.

I started at 8 weeks when I started my regular diet. I could hardly wait! I focused on the Protein, but would have a few bites of the rest of the salad along with it.

Thank you everyone! I'm about scared to try it and definitely try to focus on Protein. I do love salads though so I was hoping to try them soon. My doctor seems pretty vague about eating guidelines.. kind of a test things out and see how it goes. So weird to go through all of this, have a two week check up, 6 week check up, then 3 months! I am thinking "wait, what?!"

My doc said same thing. Trial n error once ur on phase 3, which i was moved to at 3 wk follow up appt. He said try each veg cooked and if all goes well then try them raw as salad. I cant wait to have a salad..... Never thought i would hear myself say that.

Some good guidelines and info. I wish you luck in it! Salads can be yummy. Good Protein and good veg!

Just give it time, if it doesn't go well. I have had a difficult time transitioning to food. So if it is difficult, my nut gave me some great advice- think of it as physical therapy for your new digestive tract. Start small and simple. E.g. 1/4, 1/2 or 1 teaspoon of something everyday for a few days. Then repeat with just a little more.

I'm rny, started eating salad about week 10....I have no problem with it at all. If you do a salad for a meal, get that Protein in there (chicken, shrimp, salmon, boiled egg, cheese, bacon) keep it all on the top so you can get it in. If you eat a side salad with your Protein, just focus on the protein source first, and then if room have at it with the salad.

I was lucky I guess, I had my first salad 6 weeks post-op, not more than 3 bites but it tastes wonderful and I had no issues. Although so far the only bad reaction I have had is citrus anything which is sad but I'm hoping that it goes away eventually

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
