When to start liquid diet?...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! ... This is my first post to our community ever. I didn't think I'd be doing this but it feels good to have others to turn to when curiosity comes..

Anyways im scheduled for surgery 02/21/17 I have my final appt. With my surgeon on 02/13/17 ... I've saw many ppl start their liquid diet 2 weeks prior because that's when they were told by surgeon however I meet with mine 1 week prior... I'm considering just starting it myself at least 2 weeks prior to my surgery... Any thoughts/suggestions ?

All is greatly appreciated ????????

Hi! Pre op diets seem to vary by doctor and by patient. Give your dr a call. I only needed 1 week pre op diet. But the weeks leading up I would replace a meal here and there with a Protein Shake to try some different kinds.

Your best bet is to go ahead and call your doctor's office and see how soon they want you to start your pre-op diet.

I called mine a few weeks before my scheduled surgery and they told me to start 2 weeks before. Different doctors, different pre op diets.

Lots of good advice here. Call the doc's office and check - like many of us, you may not have to do anything until the day before (some docs don't want you fasting before surgery!). There's nothing standard with these procedures and protocols.

My pre-op diet was not liquid. Mine was low carb. The reason is to have u loose weight prior to ur surgery to help shrink your liver. I drank Protein shakes, veggies, fish, and chicken lost 6 pounds the first week and 3 the second. You start liquids two weeks prior, think will be on liquids 2 to 3 weeks after. If your Dr. Advises 1 week then go by his instructions.

Good Luck

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
