New Information from My Surgeon's Office (for new bandsters)

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone:

Just thought I would share this with you guys because I didn't know any of these details and am excited about the knowledge.

I called today to schedule my 2nd fill. The girl who responded to my call is a bandster (as are most of the staff members). I was asking her about the feeling I have been having since my first fill (upper chest area). As a result of my question, she gave me the following tips:

Listen to the soft signs of fullness and learn your body's new language to avoid vomitting:

1. Runny Nose

2. Deep Sighs

3. Sinus Drainage; and

4. Hiccups

She said that these things (among others) occur when we are "full". Full does not feel the same as it used to. Accordingly, as one other OH member pointed out, the stomach actually sits way up higher than I thought it did!

Hope this is helpful to many, as it is for me.

Thanks for the info. I will keep this in mind for when I am banded.

Thanks for this information. I was wondering why I had a runny nose yesterday - didn't feel like a cold. But it was my first day off liquids, and I was feeling my way on how much to eat at one time. This explains it.

Egad.......I am going to be in trouble. I dont know that runny nose, sighs or hiccups are enough to trigger me to stop eating lol. So far so good. I do get the sensation of being full just as i did before being banded. I hope it does not go away. There are times where i am sure i am dealing with head hunger. Thanks for the info:)

what I thought was fascinating was the runny nose deal. that was unexpected. but it has already happened to me a few times, so i do believe it is true.

Some doctors call that your 'soft stop'. It has to do with the vagus nerve that runs down the throat. There's another thread about the 'soft stop' and the vagus nerve and the link on that nerve is interesting to read.

I sigh...and I know. If I eat beyond that sigh I hurt. It only takes a few times of pain or PBing to learn. negative reinforcement at its best.

Just curious, why do you sometimes get the hiccups after the first or second bite wen there is no way you can be full after just a couple of bites of Soup. That happens to me quite often, ad I also get the strangest pain in my port when I get too full. I think the food puts some sort of backpressure on my port . Anyone else ever feel that pain.

I'm not sure about the port pain thing you describe but the hiccup thing happens whne you are either full or your swallowing too fast or too much at the same time. This is what I have been told. My nose gets runny when I eat all the time; even when i'm not full - so go figure, who realy knows....

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
