I had a band about 5 years ago - worked really well for 4 years but it failed about 1 year ago & the weight has been creeping back on I have been referred to a new consultant & they have talked about a sleeve was wondering how successful is it & can it fail?

Thank you

Xx

I've heard of the Lap Band having more complications and failure than it succeeding. I actually know of a few people who have had the band, and every single one of them have either gotten it removed, or gained back their weight. The sleeve is a lot more successful. Of course, any weight loss surgery can fail if you continue with bad eating habits. It's just less likely to regain bad eating habits with the sleeve or bypass.

I know several people who have experienced success with the lapband and not had any problems. My sister has had her band for 10+ years and lost over 100 pounds and has maintained the loss. Work with your health care team and be honest with yourself about your ability to be compliant with any surgery. I now have the band and I'm losing 10 pounds a month. I'm happy with this and knew going in my loses will be slower, which I wanted. Slow and steady.

Band is not an option anymore as it's failed & the consultant doesn't do them anymore so maybe that speaks volumes as he didn't say what went wrong just that 30% fail & mine was one of them x

My surgeon is trying to get the Band away from his practice, as well. The sleeve is less harsh on your body, since it's almost impossible to get Dumping Syndrome.

80% of the stomach is removed with the sleeve. That is a big decision. Good luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
