Sharp pain normal?

Recommended Posts

So I know I'm pretty lucky to have had no real complications after my surgery on the 19th but this morning I developed a sharp pain in my upper left abdomen. It's really only if I take a deep breath in but when I do that too deep the pain doubles me over but then goes away. There is no incision there and it is only just barely tender when pushed on. Did anyone else have this or something like it? I thought I maybe drank my Protein Shakes too fast but it has persisted through the day.

It is common to feel pain after major surgery. But sometimes pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong. One condition to be watchful for is the pain associated for blood clots. Another is the pain from an infection. So having said this, the following is my surgeon's direction on when a patient should contact their physician:

* Uncontrolled or increased abdomen pain.

* Shortness of breath or calf pain.

* New onset of upper back or left shoulder pain.

* Chest pain, rapid heartbeat and/or dizziness.

* Changes to your incision - new pain, swelling, redness, cloudy drainage.

I had sleeve surgery on 12/14. I have been very lucky not to have nausea or much pain, other than some soreness. However, I have suffered from that sharp pain in the upper left abdomen. I still feel it now, but MUCH better. When I saw my dr. Last week, he said it's just from the trauma the body went through, that it's ok. Hang in there!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
