Will I ever be able to eat normally?

Recommended Posts

Im 3.5 months post RNY and have lost an amazing amount of weight. I've been extremely strict with myself!

I went to a year end function and helped myself to a few Snacks as a treat....

Two days later I weighed in and had picked up over a kilogram / half a pound!!!

It's coming off very slowly too... With ONLY shakes and lots of exercise.

Can anyone shed any light or hope? Am I going to be on shakes for the rest of my life in order to maintain my weight?

I'm looking forward to the replies here. I'm already feeling this day 6! My guess is this the answer is about the sum of the journey?

It depends on what you think normal is?

I am 25 months post op and I always have to watch what I eat or I gain weight. And...it can come on fast.

What I eat matters the most. If I allow too many carbs into my diet, I gain weight quickly.

So for me eating normal consists of dense Proteins, vegetables and fruits. Some days I add carbs like potatoes into my diet but if I do that for every meal or too many days in a row I gain.

Also, salt will cause you to retain Water weight.

From what I understand, it will never be your old normal (or shouldn't be because that's what got us in this mess, ????) but we should achieve a new normal. I am in a support group run by my surgery group. We meet once a month, and there's a huge variety of people in there from ones who are just starting to learn to vets of many years. No one there is able to eat like they did before without issue. However, all the post ops are doing well with new habits and eating healthier.

I don't mean to imply that you are asking about eating like you did before. However, there are some people on here that seem to think that is their goal for one day. Imo, those people will not find long term success.

I have a friend I teach with and have lunch with every day (normal bmi, never a bariatric patient) who watches her weoght religiously. She eats like a post bariatric patient except for the quantity. Ever so often she may indulge in a treat or eat off plan (She meal plans for her entire family) but her indulgences are truly treats. That is normal for her. This is the kind of normal we will achieve.

I'm earlier than you. My surgery was Thursday. I can imagine at a few months out, I'll still be struggling to learn the new normal. I do know that the post ops that are a year or so out seem to have met their new normal and are rolling on enjoying life.

I certainly mean 'new normal'. I stall every time I introduce the recommended foods and I had a light snack at a function and gained a whole kilo!

I don't have RNY but when you are eating solids they move through your system slower. liquids go right through you. So you are really stalling your digestive system is working.

At 6 weeks I was eating solid foods.

At 9 months I was eating pretty normal, as far as being about to eat around regular people and not raise red flags.

I wouldn't worry about that small gain, more than likely it's a normal fluctuation. It could be as simple as the fact that when you went "off plan" you consumed a higher than normal amount of sodium and you are seeing Water weight. Or any other normal biological fluctuation.

Your "new norm" should be fine as long as you are eating the right foods. And a occasional (and I mean occasional) treat shouldn't have massive impacts.

Also, down the road you will be shooting to maintain weight, not gain weight. So you will have a bigger calorie window.

Honestly, right now at 9 months post-op I'm struggling a little to figure out maintenance, but my issue is stopping losing weight. I'll do well, only 1-2 lbs lost over 4-6 weeks, then I'll drop several lbs.

I am not underweight, so I'm not overly concerned. And I assume I will look back longingly at this period in the future and wish I was still having an issue stopping losing!!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
