Calcium carbonate requires acid to break down into a digestible form. After surgery, you don't produce enough acid. That's why you need citrate. The carbonate is just exiting the other end.

If you are taking Calcium orally, then use citrate. If you are using Vitamin Patches, then use carbonate.
