Reason for Sugar Free?

Recommended Posts

What are the reasons that most post op diets require sugar free? Is it a calorie thing, or is sugar bad for a new sleeve?

Sugar, and high carbs in general prevent your body from using fat as fuel (burning excess fat). When your body uses your excess fat as fuel instead of ready to use energy found in sugar and carbs, that's what's called ketosis.

Most of our food has too much added sugar, if you start monitoring your sugar intake you may be surprised where you find it. When my husband was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and we started to cut it out, I was amazed at what some of the highest sugar foods are. Sugar is empty calories and with the sleeve I know people who get sick with sugar intake. Why waste the calories you do get on something that gives you no nutrition, might make you sick and might slow your weight loss?

Even though I'm over weight, I have always tried to keep my food natural, I don't use artificial sweeteners and chemicals!! Now what??

While I agree about trying to keep diet as clean as possible, you'll probably need to set that aside early post-op because you'll rely so much on Protein shakes in order to meet your Protein requirements. I guess you could drink egg whites but I'd speak with your nutritionist about any suggestions. After you're able to eat normal food you can easily meet protein requirements from natural sources.

As far as sugar goes, sugar = empty calories. Also, sugar is usually a trigger for many of us so it is best to avoid it as much as possible. You should read "It Starts With Food". Very enlightening.

I'm also not a fan of artificial sweeteners. And Im not eating sugar. I'm not eating sweet foods in general. If you feel the need to sweeten things I suggest fruit. In the early stages when I was on purees I would use puréed berries to sweeten cottage cheese etc.

I am basically just having a teaspoon of honey in my morning tea, drinking diluted juice with no added sugar, so I'm not adding sugar to anything and will do my best to keep my sugar low. It seems to be okay so far.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
