Preparation for surgery

Recommended Posts

Some tips for before surgery:

1. Ask your team to send you meal plans for each stage, before your surgery. You can ask here but you should really follow the plan that your team has for you. How can you plan to have things in if you don't know what you are supposed to be having?

2. If you dont have a NUT or support from a bariatric/medical team, Google can be your friend. Before surgery I read dozens of food plans on websites for after surgery, from lots of different bariatric surgeons/NUT's. I know some can be different but if on twelve websites they say soft scrambled eggs are okay for the pureed/soft stage, then its probably right. You need to know what you are allowed at each stage before you have the surgery, so you can plan. (I also had menu plans from my team and bought Alex's books and others before surgery). Learn about Protein, carbs etc and why they are important, so you understand about food choices.

3. Please be aware that most people here are not medically trained and if they have had similar symptons to you, it might be something totally different to what you are having. If you feel crap, have excessive pain all the time, are throwing up all day, not eating and drinking, you need to contact your bariatric team, GP or go to the hospital. Knowing this pre surgery may save a lot of heartache later on.

4. Be aware of what you are having done and why. Having 80%-85% of your stomach removed is no small thing. Make sure you are making the right decision for the right reasons. Learn about the surgery and recovery.

5. USE COMMON SENSE. (ops caps locked there). If eating burgers and chocolate were your downfall pre op then try to stay away from them until you are maintaining.

6. Plan, plan, plan.

Enjoy your day :)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
