I'm about three weeks out and really struggling with food aversions.

The idea of eating just about anything makes me want to gag. I can't even take the smell of food. I can swallow fine and keep food down, it's just a matter of trying to find something I can tolerate to WANT to eat. I know I need to eat to get my Protein, but shakes and powders make me gag as well. I'm down to drinking Water all day, with MAYBE two or three bites of food per day.

My NUT said to treat it like a good side effect of the surgery and it will pass eventually, but my energy is tanked and I feel weak when standing or walking.

Any advice? How long does this last?

I hate to tell you but I am 5 weeks out next Monday and I still have extreme food aversion. I don't want to see food or smell food. I don't want to watch people eat. The idea of watching cooking shows makes me want to barf.

For a couple of weeks I was able to get down 2 Premier Protein shakes a day. It took me several hours to drink each one (I would drink a little, put it back in the fridge for a while, drink a little more, etc) I was really working hard to get those 60-70 grams of Protein a day, plus my Water. I could also do some Soup, or maybe a little yogurt, every day.

This past week I added scrambled eggs and was able to get one in most mornings. This morning I am trying oatmeal and only getting a couple of spoonfuls in.

I know how hard it is, I am still tired. So thankful I don't have to work!

My NUT says this will all get better in a few weeks. Next Monday I am cleared to eat anything I want to try and I hope and pray I can add tuna and some other protein sources.

I don't understand people who eat real food a couple of weeks out from surgery at all. Some are allowed to and some are disregarding their surgeon's program but either way I just don't get how they are chocking down the things they eat.

On a side note I have lost almost 30 pounds since surgery. I think having a tight sleeve, food aversion, and starting back slowly just may pay off. But it is HARD. Much harder than I ever thought it would be. I feel hungry but nothing sounds good and even things that do sound good are hard for me to get much down.

I've had it off and on, but not continuously for more than a couple of days. When I don't feel like food, I try to find the least offensive Protein source and eat what I can of that, and focus on fluids that day.

Exact same situation. The thought of food makes me queasy. My husband fixed the kids chicken for supper and I had to leave the room. I know I need to eat to feel better, but I can't force it or it comes back up. My doctor wants me walking 30 minutes five days a week and I get winded walking around the house doing chores.

Isopure makes a clear Protein Drink -- not milky -- and maybe this would help you? My NUT suggested it pre-surgery, but I haven't had any problems with the milky ones so I didn't give it a try...hopefully it's something that'll pass! Or maybe force yourself just a little bit at a time until you get used to it.

I had a meltdown early on about the exact same thing! Sleeved 9/27. I compared my gag reflex and nausea to being pregnant again. I had a heightened sense of smell that just people's natural body odor made me sick. Animal Proteins (all meat) made me sick, just thinking about it. I went to my NUT several times about this. She said it will all pass and to just eat what will stay down. I thought it would never end. All of a sudden, like a switch it is OVER! I can eat a little more of a portion and eat most foods. It really does stink but it really does pass. Please message me if you need a buddy to get you through.

Thank you for posting this thread- I was sleeved 11/14 and am in the exact position. I'm barely eating or drinking right now. I have no interest in either. I'm logging about 100-200 calories a day and feel weak if I walk too long. I know it's bad. I know I need to fix it but am struggling to do so. I met with my Dr for my first post-op check up and told him about it. He suggested going back to the Protein shakes saying it's important to get the Protein in. So I've done that.

I'm in the puréed food stage and have had some mashed potatoes that sit nicely in my stomach. I'm also mashing edamame because they are high in protein and that has given me some energy. I tried tuna the other day but I ate too much too fast and threw it all up. Lesson learned. I'm going to try some more mashed Beans with sour cream and salsa to see if that entices me. But right now it's a struggle to get in much food or Water. I'm still happy I had the surgery, I know this will pass, but I don't like feeling so weak and light headed.

I'm 11/14 too and I'm just now trying some purred veggies and pulled chicken. I did well on yogurt and 4 shakes a day but I'm ready to move on. I can't tell if I'm full or there's gas bloating me but I try and stop eating before it's too much. Down 30 lbs so far and I don't see it stopping If I keep this type of diet up.

I was sleeved on 11/9 and felt the same way. Always nauseous after every Protein shake/powder I put in my mouth. My NUT suggested the flavorless Protein powder called Injury. It can be mixed in anything (including the foods I puree) and I love it! I still have nausea from some foods (mostly dairy) but it's not as bad anymore.

This is pretty much what I do. On those days I drink Protein shakes and nibble on cheese.

I've had days where absolutely nothing sounds good.

I did experience aversion to food. I wasn't nauseated, but just couldn't stand eating. At about the five week mark I found a couple of things that tasted okay. Then thing started improving and I can eat now. At my worst, yogurt seemed to go down without a problem. I also had Peanut Butter on Melba toast or 1/2 a toasted English muffin. I love milk, so that helped.

Go to Bariatric Choice web site and look at the Bariatric Choice brand Protein concentrate in fruit flavors. There is also a brand Proteinex that is good. I buy the lemon lime and then mix with Water and sugar free Gatorade or propel or sugar free juice. It just mixes up the shakes as well as the food some days. Syntrax is ok but the others are better imo

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
