Ideas for the constant bad taste in my mouth

Recommended Posts

Gastric Sleeve Surgery 11/16, I am still on the post surgery liquid diet for about another week. I have noticed the smell and taste sensitivities many had told me they experienced post op. It is making wanting to eat most anything upset my stomach. The nausea and acid reflux meds help but the foul taste in my mouth never leaves.

I have tried brushing my teeth constantly and mouth wash. Life savers sugar free mints are lovely, but as soon as I finish dissolving one, the taste returns, and on to the next mint.

Sounds like ketosis breath.* Mouthwash and tooth brushing won't help, as it is caused by a chemical reaction in your body/blood rather than anything on the surface of your mouth or teeth.

It should get better when you are able to eat a wider variety in your diet.

*definitely check with Dr. Google on this one -- I am not a medical professional, you should look it up and see if it sounds like what you have. It's common with the very low carb diets that most of us have to adopt immediately post-op.
Good luck!

I think buffleheads is correct. I have the same thing. Good news it means you are burning fat, bad news not much you can do. I just make sure I'm drinking a lot of fluids. I also read somewhere else to bath with dr. bronnErs peppermint soap. It was also coming though my skin when I perspire. So gross but hoping it is temporary! I'm right there with you!

Yup, ketosis. It's a good thing, means your burning fat ;)

It sounds like ketosis, which simply is a matter of your diet being overly low in carbohydrates and will go away as your diet improves. There are some diet gurus who promote the idea that this is a good thing (it's the smell of burning fat!) in order to keep people buying their diet products in the face of the unpleasant side effects. More accurately, it is the smell of not eating your vegetables - while the ketones are a natural result of the fat burning process, the implication that one needs to suffer through these side effects and offend others with bad breath and BO is untrue; one can burn fat just fine on a more balanced diet that avoids the problem, and people have been doing so for decades, long before the current low carb fad.

Thank you for the information! I'm definitely going to grab the bath soap ASAP. [emoji3]

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
