Different instructions from different surgeons

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering what everyone's surgeon told them for the first month after their surgery. My surgeon put me on a two week liquid diet with puréed as well as long as they were thing enough to fit through a straw ) but don't use the straw) and then after the two weeks I can start introducing any foods I want. I've noticed some people have different instructions and was just wondering how they helped or how difficult they were. I know my first week and about 4 days was miserable but I started adding puréed foods and soft food and my stomach and body have responded wonderfully. It's still a learning experience.

Mine is way stricter than yours. Clear Liquids and Protein Drinks only for the first 4 weeks, though I can add light or fat-free yogurt and sugar free pudding at 2 weeks post-op. Week 5 I can start purees, then week 8 I start soft foods.

3 days clear liquids; 3 weeks full liquids; 2 weeks puréed; 2 weeks soft food. Most anything after 8 weeks except nuts and seeds and crunchy raw veggies which were OKd at 3 months. I guess it was a good plan as I healed great, had amazing restriction, no vomitting, nausea or pain. Was meeting all Fluid and Protein goals by 5 days postop.

Mine was modified liquid (liquid plus Jello, pudding, smooth greek yogurt) for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of adding in puree/mushies slowly, and then if that went well, adding in solid food very carefully, with the goal of full diet in 6 weeks. Each food to add was to be done by itself, in small amounts, and chewed VERY well to see how it went/stayed down.

Mine is definitely not very strict but since I've been doing my research even before my surgery I've been very careful to make sure I don't do any harm to myself. I did Clear Liquids for the first week and then about into halfway into the second week I did a mix of puréed foods and very soft foods. That's where I'm at right now. I'm still eating things that are soft enough for break down easily and I probably won't add anything tougher until after my 3 week check up. So far everything has been good and my stomach seems to adapt very well which I'm very thankful for.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
